Thanks. I was working full time as the Marshall University photographer. I was a staff of one, not just shooting sports, but photos for the whole university. I retired a year ago after 42 years. Unfortunately, according to the compliance officer, I could not sell nor give away photos. I did shoot, as a volunteer, football again this past season.
Now that I have more time, I have been going through my old files. Will post from time to time.
Thanks again

That would definitely be awesome to be a college photographer.

I agree with Jules. This is an awesome shot. Educate me, what were your settings ? Lens ? Camera ? THanks for sharing. Paul

This photo was taken in 2011 at a game in Huntington, WV against East Carolina.
I was using a Nikon D3 with a Nikon 400 lens.
The settings:
ISO 2000
1/1000 at f3.2
It was taken a few minutes before 6pm

Thanks

It was a good job. I was the university photographer at Marshall for 41 years. Before that I was a student photographer at MU. Altogether I have been on the sidelines, court side, baseball and softball fields, swim meets, and golf courses for 44 years. I retired a year ago.
The job gave me the opportunity to see things, meet people and go places I never would have had the chance to do. I shot for the entire university not just sports. One of the first things I did when I started the job was shooting slides of open heart surgery.
I have photographed presidents, wanna be presidents, a First Lady and numerous governors, senators and congress members.
Also singers, actors an writers as well as people in all sorts of fields. Some of my favorites were Chuck Yeager, the first man to fly faster than sound, Leslie Neilson, Martin Short, Tim Conway and the writer Jean Edward Smith. He taught at the university and is the author of several biographies including John Marshall, Dwight Eisenhower, George W Bush and General Grant. I enjoyed my talks with him.

In sports we have shot at Ohio State, North Carolina, Michigan State, University of Tennessee, Florida State, Cincinnati, UK and the university of Georgia. I shot say that my wife has been with me at sporting events since 1978. She is a very, very good shooter.
I couldn’t have asked for a better job. Getting paid to do something I loved.

muphoto not only is this image a breathtaking pivotal moment of the very spirit of sports competition it has all the compelling grace of ballet. You are indeed a master of your craft and truly an ambassador of sports photography... I'm humbled at your expertise and your lengthy credentials...

Least others here believe it is all about the camera kit in photography you bring to the fore the stark realities that experience is by far the most important variable in the image equation... the herculean effort to master a craft is about dedication and endurance stoked by intense passion and love of one's craft. In my decades of experience as a classroom instructor I've always told my students: "When your work is your play and your play is your work you have arrived... Until then every else is a compromise."

In light of this post and other recent posts by Jules I'm going to ferret through my back pages to find work in sports/fitness photography that might serve to reinforce the charismatic beauty of the sports/fitness genre... Albeit since my passion is in fashion/beauty I simply can't hold a candle to your achievements muphoto.... And Jules has passed my abilities in sports/fitness long ago... together both of you are beacons of excellence that truly inspire others here going forward...

Please do continue to share on this forum muphoto, I for one deeply appreciate the stellar excellence you bring to the table... All the best on your epic journey...

I too have thought that sports, at times, could be compared to dance, especially basketball. You mentioned that your passion is fashion/beauty and I have admired photos that you have posted. I do not have much, really any, experience in that field. At Marshall I was, for the most part, an event photographer. I liked to stay in the background and capture a photographic record of the event
There were times I had to take control. Groundbreakings, big check presentations, and group shots. Didn’t take too many portraits, a few. I work under 11 different presidents of Marshall University and they all took instructions that I may give and knew that I would do nothing to embarrass them or the university. Sometimes I thought that no one was paying attention to my work. But I came to realize many were. I was honored a few years ago by the university’s alumni association with a Unsung Hero’s award. Just a few months before I retired I was again honored by being induction into the Marshall University School of Journalism hall of fame. An honor I never expected.
Marshall University has been, and still is a huge part of mine and my family’s life. I started as a student in 1971, met my future and still wife there. My daughter has 2 degrees from there and is working as the marketing director and logo manager. After I graduated I worked at a newspaper for awhile then returned to Marshall in 1978. Its been quite a ride and it’s not over yet
