No you cannot run both at the same time. When you restart the second OS the first will be removed from memory.

You might (?) be able to do it with Parallels but I doubt it. If you did not mean at the same time yes you can boot from different versions of Mac OS but only run one at a time. And if you plan to run Adobe software on two different Mac OS versions once you get to number three there could be a problem with having more than 2 activated.

Parallels will allow you to run 2 OSs at the same time - one main, the other will be in a window in the host OS
You can also do it with BootCamp - but only one will be running at a time.

It seems like there is a new operating system very frequently. Or is that just my imagination? I'm scared to update anything when I hear about all of the software that won't work any longer.

Normal Mac OS upgrades haven’t been a problem. Both Catalina and Big Sur are 64-bit operating systems, while all prior to Catalina were 32-bit systems, meaning a lot of 32-bit applications won’t work on the new systems. Apple has tools to identify which programs won’t work with the new system, and I waited until I was satisfied that the programs I use would work on Big Sur before upgrading. Other than adapting to the changes inherent with Big Sur, I experienced no problems.

I am happy (lucky) to say I've had no issues at all with the latest upgrade of BS.

Well I did it the Big Sur Update:
What happened, #1- changed my wallpaper
not in order of
Importance. #2- lost everything saved on my desktop
#3-lost Nik filters
#4-ColorMunki would not work
#5-Changed my colors on my monitors
Now after 5 hrs I have almost everything back to normal
Down loaded iStudio for ColorMunki
Found Nik filters still in my Adobe CC 2020 plugins folder and moved them to 2021 folder .Got a message late last night that My Nik collection would not work with Big Sur Must buy a newer version. Hummm it's working just fine.
Profiled my monitors, Colors looking great, the same on both monitors.
This is the first Mac OS up grade that has caused, such problems.

Interesting. I upgraded to Big Sur recently and everything was exactly as it was. With the Desktop changes are you in the correct workspace? ⌥ + Right Arrow Key.

Only one OS is running at a time but you can change the startup disk and boot the other one for the old 32 bit apps you still might need/want to run.

You may not be able to run Catalina or Big Sur on your computer I had that happen on my 2009 iMac because I didn't keep up with all of the OS updates

I don't understand how you were able to upgrade a 2009 iMac beyond a certain OS. Just upgraded my 27" late 2013 iMac to Catalina (don't want Big Sur) but all information found suggests my 2010 iMac can't go beyond High Sierra and the 2020 Turbotax requires Mojave or later. Supposedly Mojave and Catalina are only possible 0n 2012 and later computers.

Ahh it wasn't a 2009 iMac it was a 2017iMac
I referring to not being able to update my 2009 to Mojave because I hadn't kept my OS updated.

I may be wrong but I think the inability to upgrade to mojave or catalina is not due to the fact you hadn't kept OS updated but for the mere fact those OSs can't be added to any iMac older than 2012.

Dear Manglesphoto, I just bought a new Mac with Big Sur. I was just wondering if you could come visit and I will cook a nice steak and open a good wine. Oh by the way if you could just look my computer while you are here I did get my Luminar 4 laminar 2018 will not worn and I haven't got to Nik yet. Desktop image is good though.
I will never again buy any thing from an Apple Store!!! I would explain but this space isn't big enough.
