I am asking for comments and ideas about my treatment of this photo. I posted two different crops and what like to know what you think of each. What are your thoughts on my treatment of the water color, the color was adjusted in an attempt to make the pelicans stand out more.
I prefer the closer crop. To my eye, the water color distracts from the pelicans. A dark blue might work better. However, it is a neat shot. I love white Pelicans.
I like both crops, but you should adjust the "whites" or "highlights" to recover some detail in the feathers...
There needs to be enough visible detail to make the shot interesting. Cropping in close helps (I would have gone closer) and salvaging the highlights in the feathers would help too.

I cropped this one a little tighter and reduced the highlights, also this is the unadjusted color of the water.
What do you think?

I like your adjustment...I caught a group of 'em feeding at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands here in SoCal. Had to Google a bit to find that they "group feed"...how interesting, they don't dive like their cousins, the browns...

Better IMO. The two at the rear could be shepherds for the rest of the group. I've seen a group of ducks adopt a similar setup.

I would maybe add a touch more to the right, just looks a bit tight to me, but not so much as to distract from the moving into frame feel. The first crop suits this image best, for me, but I find something disconcerting in the water. It doesn't look natural.
Your camera Nikon D3400 has 24 Mpix and thus you could crop to a simple message showing only the pair of Pelicans. Philosophy, Crop to the story. Crop at the tail of the Pelicans on the right of the group. This crop gives forward movement space once the photo is cropped. Crop to 8x10 landscape cropping out background water as needed to fit, even some left and foreground water. The why of doing a horizontal flip is explained in the large free book:
http://truecenterpublishing.com/photopsy/article_index.htm I find it questionable that the speed was 1/2400. [Is my EXIFF reading correctly?].. 1/125 would have sufficed and then the lense f at 8 or 16 would have given sharp images. Reducing the ISO to 100 would have compensated for the evidently bright light of the scene.
The color saturation of the blue water is too great adjust with Topaz clarity. A quick result is below using Paintshop pro.

The birds are really sharp and that is important. I also like that the water has the appearance of some movement. I think the water's color might be a bit too saturated. Could be, though, that the light caused that saturation. I prefer the closer crop since it makes the birds fill the frame more.
