Plus use spot metering. The bright area causes the bird to underexpose.

Thanks for the metering advice. I always shoot RAW.
I was out in the open using center weighted and this guy ended up in the tree shadows. No time to mess around as you know I'm sure. He was gone in a few seconds.
In edit decided I liked the colour and mood better a little on the dark side after trying shadow adjustments.
Usually tend to like things more on the dark side exposure wise anyway.
Puzzling considering my sunny disposition :}
