The birds and critters were noticeably absent this morning. Then we saw why. Apparently the song birds are not the only ones who appreciate the old Christmas tree standing by the feeders.

Sorry. For a change I intended to upload directly from my pc. Apparently I messed up.

A Dandy! I've been trying to get an American Kestrel for years. The closest I've come is one that Kamikazed my car. Beautiful little birds.

I don't think it's a Kestrel, QD. I don't know what it is, can't get a close match in any of my bird books. I'm really terrible with hawks!
Yes a beautiful photo of a very beautiful hawk!

Beautiful capture. Nicely rendered - the background is so appropriate for the hawk's colours. Happy New Year.

Not certain, and no way to scale it. Looks a bit like the one that hit my car. No bird expert here!

Again I am sorry for forgetting to name the bird.

I thought is was a Coopers Hawk but after a closer inspection I'm convinced it is a Female Sharpshinned Hawk.

She is perched in the photo on a 2x4 railing on its side.. That measures 1 5/8" thick.. This makes the bird about 14" from tip of tail to top of head. I think too small for a Coopers. PLUS its head is rounder on top making it imo a Sharpshinned.

Thanks Joe. It was a treat to see it trying g to find a treat at my feeders. But bird seed isn't its idea of a treat.

Thanks Cheif!
I'm betting on it being a Sharpshinned Hawk, probibly a female. Possible a small male Coopers but my money of on Sharpshinned.

Have you ever used "Merlin"? Its an on line bird id app by Cornell University. For me it beats all the books, and I have a bunch of them

Thank you Ourspolair
We normally see this bird in the trees at the end of the lagoon or perched in one of the trees on the meadow. This is the second time we have seen it visiting our birdfeeders. Perhaps I need to put out something other than bird seed.
