Throughout the last few years, and especially 2020, hundreds of Historical Statues were Damaged, Defaced, Destroyed or Removed in our country.
Just curious if any of you can tell me what substantial benefit you received from this destruction? How has your life changed for the better after the removal of these historical monuments? If you live in a city where this happened, how has it bettered your community over those that still have their statues in tact?

I have not received any positive gains except my grandkids and great-grandkids are asking question on why it is happening. I tell then there are many bad people who do not want our kids to know the past to aid them in the future. For people who do not know the past are bound to make the same mistakes. They do not want you to know the history of s***ery or know that we fought a civil war over the s***ery. That some of our founders did have s***es. But the thing they must remember is at the time they lived it was normal. Yes, we did have s***ery in the U.S. but so did most of the rest of the world. In many cases it was and still is worse than it was in the U.S. That our first president George Washington did own s***es but upon his death they were set free. Abraham Lincoln did not own s***es but died in believing they should all be free. At this time they are happy with what they were told but asked if they could come back and talk more later.

There's a difference between a historical figure and a t*****r. I don't agree that everyone who ever owned a s***e have their statues removed. However, figures, like Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson were t*****rs and should never have had memorials put up.
I believe people are conflating issues when they speak of teaching the past as it relates to statues. You can certainly teach history without having a memorial to the evil, the miscreants, and the criminals.
To point; We all know of Adolf Hitler, yet we have no statues of him in public places, nor should we.
Just one man's opinion.

Yet there is a statue of Lenin in downtown Las Vegas.

Regardless of whether or not you believe confederate generals to be t*****rs or not, what benefit does society gain through the destruction of those statues?

Why do you support idolizing t*****rs is a better question.

Sadly, another example of being ignorant or disingenuous in an attempt to deflect. The statue was erected by a Russian-themed restaurant on its own property. After complaints, the company lopped his head off. The whole thing, including the restaurant, has been gone since 2019. Look it up.

I would suggest that even the definition of "t*****r" has some subjectivity to it. Trump has fired several of his key people for not agreeing with him or supporting him. He hired them as "nothing but the best" and "great guy who will do great in the job", but fired them and called them "t*****rs." I certainly would not accept Trump as the arbiter of who is a t*****r and who is not.

Society is comprised of individuals and citizens of the United States are not, and never have been, treated equally. I won't presume to speak for those who feel personally hurt or offended by statues memorializing Robert E. Lee, but I think removing them is a small way to acknowledge those citizens. There have been equivalent actions - and changes in laws - throughout our history, including the role of women in the military. That is an "issue" with which I am personally familiar.

Besides, aren't there far more pressing issues to be concerned about this year than statues??

Tell your grandchildren that history is history but, the interpretation of said history changes as more information comes to light.

Much of the true history of this country has been hidden by those that wish to push an agenda.

Another point: statues, monuments and memorials honor the figure or moment being depicted. That is far different from written history.

Statues were a hot topic in 2020, and were desecrated in many cities. If there were more pressing issues, why were they targeted, and what benefit did was achieved by the destruction?

Unfortunately, this lunacy can all be tied back to Trumpism. He has broken America. He has convinced almost half the country that he is a patriot who is fighting for all Americans by upholding The Constitution as the law & order most t***sparent POTUS ever.

Perhaps his t***sparency is the problem, because his supporters are looking right past — or through — him and not seeing the narcissistic buffoon for what he really is. This whole statue and military base renaming thing is yet another distraction so that his followers don’t see the real issues and crises of the day, like the p******c that beat him beyond his control. He just cannot accept defeat by the v***s or by the v**ers, so he is destroying everything around him with his petulant pouting. Yet his base continues to deify him. Fools!

When I wrote that sentence, I was referring to your choice of discussion topic, but your follow-up question is thoughtful and valid.

The vandalism was a reaction to specific police actions as well as wider-ranging r****m. Regarding removal by local governments or organizations, as I mentioned in a different entry: statues, monuments and memorials honor the figure or moment being depicted. That is far different from written history.

Your Opening Post seems to suggest that you equate the symbolism of statue vandalism - or removal by officials - with more direct and less complex elements of society like maybe traffic laws or municipal budgets. This is obviously a false equivalency - not comparable. A hugely complex wider issue (r****m and lack of e******y) can not be discussed in any meaningful way by focusing on a tiny part, no matter how "visible" it is.
