I purchased my first digital Nikon camera almost 20 years ago. I progress from D70 to D200 to D700 and now D750. My D750 is 6 years old and I love using it. My question for the group is should I purchase a D780 or D850? For now not considering the Nikon Z camera basically because I have numerous Nikon or Tamron Lenses and expense is an issue. I do a lot of landscape and macro pics. Thought the D780 would be nice because I do photo stacking for my macro flower pics. Any insights? thanks

The FTZ adapter for the Z series cameras works like a charm and AFAIK all F mount lenses will work using it especially with the FTZ firmware update installed. I am not sure about the Tamron lenses but I'm sure that there is published information out there in the ether.

FYI I am going to list my no longer used D-850 later today so watch the For Sale section. It is the last of my Nikon SLR gear.

David, My question is what is your D750 not doing that a 780 or 850 will do. Do you have GAS? Gear Acquisition Syndrome?Stay safe and healthy. Happy New Year!Stan

Basically Photo Stacking. My D750 is showing some wear too. Hiking Utah and Colorado I have scratch the back view screen. So basically would like another camera to do Photo Stacking and other updates.

Thanks for the reply. I have several photo friends that we do outdoor photo shoots that have Cannon or Sony mirror-less cameras. They seem so light and small where I like the feel of my D700 or D750. I even add a battery pack to help with stability on my tripod.

Does a scratch on the body impact the images? If you're trying to 'buy' better images, you'll be wasting your money. You bought the best at 24MP for a 10+ year useful life when you bought the D750. There's no reason to be lusting for anything else at this point as the performance at more megapixels doesn't make the pronounced difference as it did from say the D700 to D750.

I find myself using the Z6ii more often than my D850, D780 or Z7. I like the Z50 and the Canon M50.

Thanks for your insights. I love my D750 but again it is 6 years old thought it would be nice to have camera in the 24MP range.

For your type of photography you probably want to capture the most detail possible, so I would recommend the 45.7mp D850, which is arguably the best dslr ever made. It has a built in focus stacking feature, which is great for macro work and the focus peaking feature is great for landscapes. I use a D500 for wildlife / birding and the D850 for everything else. The D850 is an amazing camera.

I think it would be good to google comparisons between the D750 and each of your options. I just purchased the D780 this past year to get a FF camera and I love it but many with D750s have commented that there is not enough change to justify the price just to upgrade. Lots of luck on what ever you select.

You can say that the D780 is overpriced at $2300. A month ago on sales you could get the D850 for $2500. At a time on sales the D750 was only $1300 and now it's $1500. I don't think the D780 is that much better than the D750.

I have a D750. The D780 doesn't add a significant amount. The D780 adds a backside illuminated sensor and the on-sensor phase detection autofocus from the Z6. The D780 is superior to the D750 if shooting video. I don't think its worth upgrading otherwise.

I would consider the Z6II at this point. Nikon is focusing their efforts on developing Z-mount lenses right now. The new lens mount is allowing engineers to design better lenses. I rented the Z6II for two weeks recently. I was impressed. I will purchase one in the near future.

David, it is always good to "hear your voice" now and then. You always have something useful to say.
