I've been reading UHH for quite some time now, but this is my first post, and one of my first attempts at a flower. The wife liked this one, so I cropped it a bit, and gave it to her on a 16x20 canvas for x-mas. What's here is SOOC, shot with a D7500 and 18-140mm, held in my right hand, while holding a wirelessly triggered SB-700 speedlight at roughly 90 degrees in my left. ISO 100, 1/60, f/4.5, 45mm focal length, and TTL flash. I was with the family and relatives and had to shoot quick, so I'm pretty pleased with how this one came out.
Let me know what you think. Constructive criticism is welcomed.
Nicely captured. The crop is pleasing and the colors are nice. When you post for comments it helps if you check the Store Original box so we can view the shot at full size

Beautiful flower!!! I love the color.
In addition to storing the original of this one so that we can view it larger and with more detail it would be nice to see how you cropped it for the 16 x 20. Store original on that also, please.
What has my attention at the moment is that it looks like your leaves and farthest petals are in focus but the front of the flower is not. I don't know if you missed the focus, if you were doing it manually or if your auto focus needs to be fine tuned.

That is a really great start and composition! The light is a bit too bright and harsh. Try shooting it again (or similar) on a totally overcast day with little wind and see if the results are not much more pleasing to you. Even better yet is the calm right after a rain shower if it is not too windy.

Very Nice, possibly a little lower, looking up at the Whole Flower,, off Camera Flash good choice. 😊👍
Very nice work, thanks for sharing. Happy New Year!
You found a great flower with nice color and a very nice arrangement of leaves to shoot. I would rotate the image 90 degrees clockwise to mage it a vertical shot. It would give the image a better feel. It is best to shoot flowers on an overcast day or use a diffuser to shade the full sunlight from the flower. When you shoot in full sunlight there is too much contrast and the bright areas get blown out. When parts of the petals are blown out you can't appreciate the true colors of the flower. The background in a shot like this is very important. You did great with this shot with a great out of focus background. In close-up photography the background can be more important than the subject. Backgrounds make or break an image. Just my thoughts.

I like it very much! But most important, what was your wife's reaction?

Thanks Dodie. FYI, I looked back at where the focus point was, and it's just left of center pedal. It was shot with single point auto focus, so it's interesting the leaves appear sharper to you. I'll admit, I've never checked the focus calibration of the combo, nor do I have the targets to do it.

She really likes it. She had me hang it on the bedroom wall yesterday. A couple of folks commented that the lighting is too harsh, which I can understand, but we like it. It would be interesting to try something similar again using an umbrella on the flash, but with the family it's hard to imaging being able to take that much time.

I agree. Looking at it, it would be better if it had been shot looking up, more square to the face of the flower.

There is a video on YouTube showing how to use 3 "D" batteries to focus on. Another shows using a ruler. I have done both and I prefer using the ruler.
Keep trying!!!

Thanks for all the positive and constructive comments. In regards to the crop, it was done in the printer's system, so I don't really have it. One thing I did learn is that I need to leave a little more space around the subject for cropping. The only option at this particular printer (Walgreens), was to wrap the picture around the sides of the canvas, as opposed to mirroring the sides. This meant that I had to crop a little bit of the top and left side leaf tips onto the sides of the canvas. I would have preferred not to do that, but there wasn't another option.
