I forgot about LAB mode. Many years ago I had read an article about sharpening in the lightness Channel. It was easy and very convincing. Sometimes I remember to do it. I hunted for the article. Found several others instead. While reading this one, he identified the B channel as affecting the blue and yellows, so I opened the last edit of your image to experiment. Having selected the B channel, all I did was go to levels and pulled the dark slider towards the center. Dramatic. Then I dropped the contrast on the A channel. Don't remember how I went about it, but it softened the branches. This is the article. Now that I see its usefulness with colors, I'm pretty sure I will revisit lab mode more often. https://www.photo.net/learn/sharpening-in-lab-color/

Thanks for the terrific information, Mark. Not available in PS Elements, but for Photoshop users, this seems like an extremely useful tool.

I have never sat in front of Elements. Sorry you don't have this feature.

Here's another try. I opened your photo in PS CC, unlocked the layer, created a layer style, Blending Options. I Selected Blend If/Grey, and moved the right slider slightly to the left, to about 254, which made the white background become transparent, but left the snow. Finally, I added a cloud layer. There's some ghosting around the branches, I notice, but it was a quick way in PS to change the background.

Thanks Dan!

The pink clouds are cool
