From Wikipedia: During the American Civil War Mound City was the site of the Mound City Naval Hospital. The cemetery was used to inter both Union and Confederate soldiers who died while under care at the hospital. After it was declared a National Cemetery in 1864 several nearby battlefield cemeteries arranged to have their remains reinterred here. This is located in Pulaski County, Illinois and this holiday season wreaths were placed at most of the tombstones

Thanks for sharing the photos and story, Jerry. It was uplifting to see the Christmas wreathes on the graves.

Very well taken and the wispy clouds and colors pop on screen. It's warming to know that there is still respect for those fallen who fought when asked regardless of what side of the battle they were on for other than the color of their uniform they were but a common man.

I have family that fought for both sides. It encouraged me to research how each group saw the issues and the war. Such terrible loss, devastation and grief. Even the final victory was hollow from the emptiness of so many homes, so many families.

I appreciate your respectful pictures and this well maintained memorial I was not familiar with until now. Thanks.

This cemetery is just north of Cairo, Illinois, a town on the southern tip of the state where the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers meet. Cairo itself has a very interesting history.

Thanks for looking Joe. I don't know which group provides and places the wreaths but yes, it is uplifting.

Thanks Sippy. Many soldiers die fighting for a cause they may not agree with.

Thanks Paul. This was my first time visiting this cemetery even though I live only 40 miles away.

Very interesting! I didn't know they had a National Cemetery there, another 'to do' on my local Illinois list.

I was thinking of you when I posted these as I know you enjoy visiting these National cemeteries. I want to go a few miles south of there for the photo opportunities in Cairo but not without an armed bodyguard.😱
