I came by some Fuji Superia 800 in boxes marked as expired from November 2002. This film stock was discontinued by Fuji in 2016. Thinking back, I don't know that I've ever shot ISO-800 film before, definitely not anything faster. Below are some evening shots around Margie's Candies in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago.

Margie's Candies by Paul Sager, on Flickr

The original Margie’s opened as the Security Sweet Shop in 1921, founded by Greek immigrant Peter George Poulos, who soon handed the business to his son George. Built in 1911, the building at the corner of Western and Armitage has also housed banks, with vaults and safe-deposit boxes still in the property's lower level. Chicago mobster Al Capone allegedly patronized the sweet shop during its early years.

Margie's Candies

The 1920s were the boom years for the Chicago's hot dog stands as a fixed venture, often no more than a shack with a ledge for ordering and serving.

Jr's Red Hots

Stands populated Jewish and Italian enclaves on Chicago's West and South Sides, serving a cheap meal on a bun that was especially welcome during the Depression and has become emblematic of the city itself.

Redhot Ranch

By the summer of 2005, nearly all the city's hot dog stands were touting the salad-on-a-bun “Chicago style” dog. The two partners of Redhot Ranch wanted to reintroduce the city to the original Chicago dog often referred to as the “Depression dog”, a minimalist hotdog served with mustard, relish, onion, sport peppers and fresh-cut fries.

Redhot Ranch

I really like the rich saturation of Fuji Superia, and especially the look of shooting at 1-stop faster than the box speed, at ISO-400, if the Superia 800 could be bought fresh. I also added another +1 stop as expired film, shooting at an effective ISO-200 for all these images.

Camera - EOS 1v with an EF 16-35mm f/4L IS.

Bucktown Sunset

The ice cream parlor became Margie’s Candies in 1933, when George renamed the store after his wife, whom he had met at the shop when they were both younger.

Margie's Candies

The store has hosted celebrities like the Beatles, musician Liz Phair and "allegedly" the infamous Chicago mobster Al Capone. Peter Poulos took over from his grandparents in 1995.

Very nice images and the look and quality of film is very present.

Woah, a blast from my past! I had completely forgotten about that gem. Never shot a ton of it but it sure was handy when I needed it. It was generally, (almost always) good to me and saved my (proverbial) bacon by making me look good with the higher ups. Nice images. By chance did you sample a dog whist out shooting?

Very cool pics of a great sounding place! Wonderful colors! If it was a bit closer to us I'd be there for some Chicago "dogs" !! Used to shot the 400 Fuji and enjoyed it, never tried the 800.

Thank you Bruce, medphotog, olemikey, ELNikkor, Irvingite Charles, John! I scoured the internet for ideas / experiences on shooting Fuji Superia 800 and expired film in general. One school of thought is add 1-stop for every 10-years of expiration. Another school is to add +1 stop and then shoot 'as normal', where 'as normal' involves finding a recommended adjustment to the box speed. In the case of this expired 800, I ended up at +2 stops using either formula and shot at an effective ISO-200 that isn't that 'fast' after all. So I also brought an IS-enabled wide angle lens. With no feedback while shooting, I was really happy with the results when they came back.

Thank you medphotog! I managed to hold off a dog from Jr's and the burgers at RedHots. These aren't my neighborhood joints, so I didn't know the owners at RedHots feature a Chicago version of the burger style of In-N-Out burger. I came just for the lights at Margie's, so everything else was just waiting for the light to change over the course of an hour. The research came later, so i guess I'll be better prepared next time.

Thank you riderxlx! I've been shooting in mostly sun / nice light. Although a nice evening in November for Chicago, the light was a challenge. Glad you enjoyed.

Thank you d=for the reply Paul.
I always enjoy your posts and comments to others too. To me, film just has 'that look' , smooth and clear.
Your work is always appreciated.
We have a lot of sun here in Texas. Today, 70's, shorts, no shirt, washing the cars. Enjoy the good weather there while you can.
Be cool.
Bruce.

These shots suggest the film was expired only on paper. It certainly I’d the job with pizazz.

Thank you Carol! These scanned images have been through Lightroom. A lot of the expired colored film is coming back with a red tint. I'd call these the finished results, differing from the scans, whatever we might call that step in the process. The experience has prompted me to look for more Fuji Superia 800 and to consider fresh Kodak Portra 800, maybe the only current film still to be had at this speed. But still, those shooting film online say to rate the Portra at 400. That would give me a stop of shutterspeed over these expired rolls, but still not really that 'fast'.
