Any idea how this is done.

Saw this image in a FB meme and would love to know how it's done. I would think the light circle is a separate image, combined with the winter scene in post. But how to get that light circle? Ideas? Theories?

Thx, and Merry Christmas!

IMO, A natural occurrence cleverly captured - Halo around the sun, sun centered behind the tree. The bright spots on the halo are sun dogs.

I was hoping to track down the original, but a Google Image Search shows that this photo is everywhere!! I did see a mention of lens flare, and quixdraw wrote a good observation for natural-occuring, as well.

I think it could be reproduced by starting with a photo of the sun behind a tree, then selecting a circle of the edge, pasting as new layer and then enlarging/softening/extending bits with liquify tool. I might try it today; I'll let you know

If you search Arctic Weather Phenomena, you can find many similar examples of a Halo with Sun dogs, result of ice crystals in the air. It still could be a composite.

I did the search and am amazed to see extremely similar images. So I think you are likely correct. Bums me out a bit, though . . . I really had hoped to duplicate it in PS. Thanks to all for weighing in.

I was hoping to track down the original, but a Goo... (show quote)

Hi Linda! I'd love to see your attempt at this. After looking at arctic weather images, though, it does appear to be natural.

I ended up going in a slightly different direction ๐Ÿ˜

Details are in my new topic here. I appreciate the inspiration, Liam!

You are correct Quixdraw, sometimes called a Blue Sky Halo. Light refracted thru
ice crystals at close to 22 degrees. They usually don't last but a few minutes, catch
it when you can. Light refracting thru water drops creates a rainbow.

Sun Dog for sure, likely a composite. Nicely done in any event.

A friend pointed out the shadows of the trees are curious, going in different directions and so not likely real shadows cast from the sun directly behind the primary tree. I think the sun dog is real as there are so many images of this on the net, but the end product I suspect in a composite.

Liam, I donโ€™t have a nice soft circle such as you show but I did get this circular sun flare and itโ€™s not hard to replicate.

Yes, a Sun Dog. I took this pic with my horrible old phone. The green is obviously lens flare but the flare on the right is totally natural and untouched. I was driving and noticed it and turned around and went back to take the pic.
There are also Moon Dogs in the right conditions. I've had the privilege to witness both.
Merry Christmas!
