Typically I would plug in the SD card to the laptop and my Mac would see it as another drive, then I open the SD drive and download the images. Hower my XQD Sony adaptor for the Z6 camera does not show up nor does it appear and is not recognized. The OS on the Mac is Big Sur 11.1; I checked the hardware configuration the reader does not show up, like it does not exist. Maybe something I have failed to do or download. Does anyone have similar issues with the XQD cards? Could it be a defective Sony card reader? I tried several cables USB A and C without success. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thank You.
Is this the first time you tried the XQD card in the reader?
Is the XQD adapter different than the reader?
How old is the reader? It might not support the XQD format, even with the adapter?
The XQD is about 18 months old, it never worked. But I think I just found the reason; there is no power to the adaptor through the USB C cable, but if I use a USB A to USB C adaptor it worked. It is not the cable, but the power connection within the C arrangement. I thought it was a bad cable so I tried another one with an A configuration and it powered up the XQD device.
I have been trying to get this to work since I purchased but failed and frustrated, I put it the drawer until now. Amazing.

Manufacturers keep changing crap.
Works with this... doesn't work with that...
I
think all my cables pass through power. Not 100% sure though.
But none are the micro. Yet...
By accident I figured out that when I use an USB A cable with an adaptor to C. it worked; go figure. the moral of the story is not all the same cables are alike.
Thanks

Yep, USB C is not your fathers cable. In our household we just bought some new mobile devices and behold we were in the wonderland of USB C cables. There was a whole new set of capabilities I did not understand so I resorted to the font of all relevant knowledge, Wikipedia. Like nearly all Wikipedia articles the first few paragraphs are understandable by all before it descends into into agonizing detail. (Search USB-C in Wikipedia.) It is the latest thing in cables. The connectors are designed to be small, rugged and support super duper speed connection. The entire cable assembly is designed to support faster USB 3.xx+ plus higher power distribution including fast charging. The latter includes active identification of the cable to support negotiation of power supply capability. The cable has been incorporated into Thunderbolt, Display Port, and HDMI specs. Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) and VirtualLink (neither of which I have heard of) are being included. E-net alternatives would make it the only cable type needed for a computer.
I bet the power distribution features are the issue pledging the adaptor. And again there are cables on the market that are clearly only useful for charging mobile devices.
The C cable was supposed to be the answer to everything; with 100W capability to power devices there will not be any need for a separate power connection to monitors or peripherals and super duper speed, until stuff does not work. In my case a simple XQD adaptor failed to get any power from the C port; I tried several cables until I found one A type and was forced to use the adaptor to plug into the C port. Then for some miraculous reason, I got power from the C port to the same XQD adaptor.

You need to have the correct reader. XQD cards have 2 generations of protocols, and they are NOT interchangeable. Gen 1 cards will not read in a Gen 2 reader. Gen 2 cards will not read in Gen 1 readers. You need to match your reader with your card.
OK, I will check, I purchased the reader and the card at the same time about mid to late 2019 and it is assumed they were compatible then.
Thank you

If your card is 1100x or slower its Gen 1. 1400x or faster is Gen 2.
No such designation anywhere on my card, only the SN and model QD-G64E. Maybe this card was made before these designations, it is only a 64GB card.
Thanks, I did not know that; love this site.
