After inquiring about a Nikon DSLR they've listed asking for the number of clicks and if it's a US model, I got this:

"Thank you for your email. Unfortunately, all our used gear warehoused in a separate limited access facility. Due to this we are unable to provide specifics about any of the items listed for sale. However, all our used gear carries a 14 day no hassle return period and 6-month warranty, so if the item is not as expected it can be returned with the exception of AS-IS or Ugly merchandise. The grading system does provide you a guide to go by to help you make choices on your selections."

I'm at odds whether or not I should try it. Seems like a lot of process to for a test drive. I'm also wondering if they are drop-shipping these from a third party. Anyone else have experience good or bad with them?

Yes, nothing but good things to say about them. But, like everyone, they might miss something - if they do, they make it right.

I have made many purchases from KEH and have always been satisfied with what I received. Their rating system is very accurate.

I have been doing business with KEH for almost 30 years, since they operated a satellite retail storefront in Dallas. Know both King Grant and his wife. They are both honorable folks. Both their buying and selling processes are very streamlined. I've never known them to check for shutter counts or product 'heritage' when either buying or selling, but rather depend on a thorough visual examination and operational check to make their assessment (You used to be able to watch them do it, and they would even talk you through what they were doing.) Now that they are a much larger and on-line only operation, procedures and capabilities have changed somewhat, but they remain the same honorable folks that they have always been.

If they say they'll take it back, rest assured that they will take it back. If there is a problem, know that they will work to resolve it, if at all possible.

KEH doesn't expend much / any effort to actually test the equipment, including an effort to capture a shuttercount. They're more of a middleman between the old owner and the new owner. If the new owner wants to test the lens or check the shutter count, they can and then return it, with a prepaid shipping label with no questions asked within the initial two weeks.

Most of my equipment is used and most from KEH. Over the past 10 years, I've returned 2 maybe 3 lenses that did not operate when mounted to an actual camera. Having sold to them on their roadshows, I can see now they just do a visual inspection, add to their online inventory, and just ship to the next customer. A broken AF motor, my experience for all the returned lenses, would have been obvious from the first shutter click, if tested. But, there's no value in that effort when the next customer can do the work.

I have made several lens purchases from KEH, and I would consider their rating system to be somewhat conservative - everything I have ever recieved from them was in better condition than what I would have expected

If you do order the camera, first thing is to look at the serial number. In most cases Nikon US camera's will start with a 3.
You can check the clicks easily on the internet. If you feel that it has too many after checking it, you have 15 day return policy.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

True ! I received a nice new-looking lens Friday, and in 15 minutes I mailed them asking for an RMA with prepaid shipping label. Lens is nonfunctional. Schidt does happen. I know from experience this will go well. I’ll get my choice of a refund or a no charge upgrade if available. Now is Monday and I’ll have resolution by 5pm.

KEH runs an honest business with great customer service. But CHG CANON is correct that they don't really take a close look at the gear they sell, or at least don't share their observations with their customers. The photos are not of the actual gear. They don't offer shutter counts, and they don't say whether or not their gear is grey market.

I once bought a D300 at KEH that had an Australian serial number. It was still a great value, and in great shape, so I rolled the dice and kept it...it still works fine. I've bought two bodies with unknown shutter counts...both were relatively low and the condition ratings were very conservative. One "Bargain" body I bought looked new and had less than 20,000 clicks.

They do offer easy returns if you're dissatisfied, but they pretty much leave the detailed inspection up to their customers.

It seems KEH skipped some on inventory control, by shortchanging descriptive text.

I have been totally satisfied with KEH, both buying and selling. You have 14 days to check everything out.

I saw a KEH add for a film camera the other day that was graded as excellent but said it was sticky. How do you grade something as excellent when it is sticky to the touch? And why didn't they do the simple thing and clean it with isopropyl alcohol? I've done that on a couple of cameras I've purchased recently. They cleaned up and looked like new.

Another great site is mpb.com They have been around as long as KEH, and seem to offer a slightly better price.

I bought only one lens from KEH based on their reputation here on UHH. It was better than described — actually like brand new without the box.
