For some reason, the word "tons" has gotten very popular. Listen to people talking on TV for just a few minutes, and you'll hear it - maybe. : )

"You probably don't have tons of experience with this."

"I can't go out tonight. I have tons of homework."

"Don't buy that car. It needs tons of work."

When you listen for examples of people using this word, one of two things will happen: you'll hear it every minute; you'll never hear it.

Right! Now it is coming back with a vengeance, though.

It's been in use round here for at least 30 years just to mean a large amount.
BTW I don't live in the new world, still stuck over in the old one. :)

I recently ordered some coal. The coal merchant asked, “How much do you want, I’ve got tons.”

Yes...another less than favorite I hear all the time from younger folks than I; substitution of 'Buttload" for "boatload" to describe large amounts of anything.......I can do with a boatload, but I'm definitely not interested in a buttload of anything!!!

I never knew the word "tons" ever went any where, it has been in use as far back as I can remember.
