MAC EL Capitan and BoxSync

I had to re-load my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2009) running El Capitan. This was a disaster, due to the age of the laptop. After some research I got it to load, and install El Capitan. It will not take any newer OS. I had BoxSync running on it, successfully, before I reload the OS. Now, It does not recognize BoxSync. I down loaded Box from their website as recommended from their support, installed it, but it will not run. Box sync support is telling me to buy a new computer, which will have a newer OS.
How ridiculous is this. No support for older systems. Any comments??

It is time to consider a newer system. About a year ago I upgraded from a mid 2008 MBP to a 2012 MBP that I found in a pawnshop. It runs the 64 bit programs and my older 32 bit programs that haven't been updated. In a year or so I plan to buy a new computer after Apple works out most of the bugs in their new chips. Ten to eleven years is an eternity for computer systems and the manufacturer and third party developers cannot be expected to keep everything backwards compatible forever. Would you expect Ford to keep parts in a 2020 car compatible with a 1960 model.

Yes, find a way to get one of the new M1 Macs. A 2009 MBP is woefully underpowered for any applications released after about 2015. Besides, it is NOT SAFE to use on the Internet, since Apple quit issuing security updates for El Capitan (MacOS 10.11.6) long ago. Apple typically supports ONLY the current and last one or two operating system versions with security patches.

From the Box website: "Box Sync system requirements for Macs: Mac running one of the two most recent OS versions and an HFS+ or APFS formatted hard drive." I'm sure the OS requirement is based on security and support, not whether or not the software can be "made to run."

If you upgrade, you will wonder why you didn't do it way sooner. Of course, a new Mac may mean upgrading some or all of your applications, and some cables and peripherals as well. Some older scanners and printers may not be supported on later hardware and operating systems. Any you may need adapters or a dock to connect older USB and FireWire devices. An adapter or a dock may also be required for an older monitor.

Do any amount of YouTube research on the M1 Mac Mini, M1 MacBook Air, or M1 MacBook Pro 13", and you'll be amazed. The MaxTech channel on YouTube compares them all to typical Intel Macs and PCs. Spoiler alert: Even the base models' performance bests nearly all computers in the same price classes.

I'm in a similar situation, with a 2010 Mac Mini and a Late 2013 21.5" iMac. The iMac tops out at MacOS 10.15.7 Catalina, and with hacks can run Mac OS 11.x, but I'll keep the iMac on Catalina until I get an M1 or later Mac. My old Mini works on MacOS 10.12.6 Sierra, as a media server in my living room, disconnected from the Internet almost all of the time.

Yes, I still own a PowerMac G4 from 1999 that runs fine. But it runs the same applications that it did back in 2008 and earlier! We use it once a year to update a single PageMaker document and print another PDF.

The computer industry churn IS annoying. We can bitch about it or deal with it. I do both...

I would really hate to give up the 27” iMac, but may do so if a 27” “Newish” one can be located @good $$.

Then I can “dual monitor” w/ old one . . . .

This website lists apps and their current state of readiness to run either natively in Apple Silicon (M1), or with Rosetta 2 translation. You can scan your slate of apps and see what has been upgraded/updated to be compatible.

All 32-bit apps died with MacOS 10.15 Catalina. It's only been 15 years since Apple started selling 64-bit computers... They finally killed off the hold-outs. Sadly, that includes a lot of software that will never be re-written or replaced. BUT, life is full of little trade-offs.

And yes, I'd find a way to upgrade, if not to M1, to a used Intel Mac. (Although the M1 MacBook Air is plenty powerful for most uses and starts at $999.)
