I thought I'd install Parallels on my iMac so I can run some Windows programs. Any comments, suggestions?

Hey Doc ..... A six legged donkey may do good in the snow but would make for one slow moving ass .....

Two or three years ago a buddy did it, nothing but problems so he removed it. He was advised to increase the Ram but he didn't want the expense.

I've used Parallels since I bought my MacBook Pro because there were a few programs I couldn't find an equivalent for on the Mac. It hasn't caused me any problems & I only start it up when I need it. Works fine for me.

I have Parallels 7 on my iMac and it runs great with no problems. I have it running all of the time. One thing on setting it up is how you set up your drives. I use the Parallels C drive for my database and when I close I back up to the iMac side then it gets automagicly backed up using time machine.

I use it mainly to run a genealogy program that is only available for a PC.

I have tried Crossover, Virtual box, and Fusion. Parallels was the best for me. If you watch you can get a good deal. I am waiting for a good deal to upgrade to version 8.

I heard, and don't know if it is true, that your Mac is then exposed to the all the viruses that a PC would be exposed to. I would suggest you do more research on that subject.

Does the iMac have the Intel processor? If so, you can use Boot Camp - it's faster since you boot directly to Windows and not try to run it with OS-X.

And, yes, the Windows partition is vulnerable to Win viruses, so you just ave to be careful if you use that side on the web or for email.

Hey Doc ..... FYI Mac is vulnerable to viruses designed to attack Mac ..... Mac holds a very small worldwide market share, last time I looked was under 4%, so PC's are the most likely target for hackers .....

I specifically asked Apple if Windows (run via Parallels) became infected by a virus, would it affect my Mac or just the Windows application. They said it would affect only the Windows programs - viruses targeting Windows do not affect Mac. But, your Windows and Windows based software could be badly affected. So, I do not connect to the internet when running Windows software. (The only program I need to run on Windows is for a volunteer organization.)

I do have virus protection on the windows but it is the free one. You can get a virus on the windows side but it normally will not effect the mac. I also do not do much web surfing using IE just to one or 2 genealogy sites.

Windows under Boot Camp means you have to boot into windows or mac and can not have them both running at the same time.

With Paralles, Fusion, or Virtual Box they all have a mode that lets you have both running at the same time.

In my mac I have the windows programs I run along the bottom of my screen and click on them just like a mac program and they fire up and run. The only way you know it is a windows program in Parallels is that you have 2 red parallel lines in the icon.
