From the New York Palace Hotel we make a quantum leap (well, at least 16 blocks …) up to the Central Park, the "green lung" of the City. Actually, the leaves are down, and the night is dark, so we don't see much of the "green", but at the famous "Tavern on the Green" we enjoy viewing their Christmas decoration in their courtyard as well as in the building. We have quite fond memories of dining in this elaborate venue a number of times during our 16-year stay in New York ending in 2007, unfortunately the restaurant ran into problems after our departure (I guess they couldn't do well enough after we stopped coming.....), it was closed in-between and reopened in 2014 and our visit in 2015 did not live up to our exalted expectation based on former experiences, but it was still an enchanting place. Then we proceed through the streets decorated with festive lights down to New York's famous Lincoln Center, the powerhouse for the performing arts in the City.

TAVERN ON THE GREEN
The building housing the restaurant was originally the sheepfold that housed the sheep that grazed Sheep Meadow, built in 1870. The sheep were evicted from the sheepfold in 1934 under NYC Parks commissioner Robert Moses. From its grand opening in 1934 to its closure in 2009, the iconic restaurant changed ownership several times. From 2010 until 2012, the building was used as a public visitors center and gift shop run by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. After a multimillion-dollar renovation, Tavern on the Green reopened to the public on April 24, 2014. Throughout its history, Tavern on the Green has been frequented by prominent actors, musicians, politicians, and writers. It has also received several awards, including those for the best restaurant in the Upper West Side, and the best wine menu.

LINCOLN CENTER
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (also simply known as Lincoln Center) is a 16.3-acre (6.6-hectare) complex of buildings in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. It has thirty indoor and outdoor facilities and is host to 5 million visitors annually. It houses nationally and internationally renowned performing arts organizations including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York City Ballet. Juilliard School of Music also became part of the Lincoln Center complex.
A consortium of civic leaders and others led by, and under the initiative of, John D. Rockefeller III built Lincoln Center as part of the "Lincoln Square Renewal Project" during Robert Moses' program of urban renewal in the 1950s and 1960s. Respected architects were contracted to design the major buildings on the site, and over the next thirty years the previously diverse working class area around Lincoln Center was replaced with a conglomeration of high culture to please the tastes of the consortium.

More great images, Joe. I really don't want to ever go to New York so I'm glad you have documented Christmas there so well.

Thank you Sue Ann for looking in on my mini-travelogue of NY and your kind comment - I am glad I could lead you to stroll your memory lane - I don't know whether you have seen the earlier posts in this series, if not, you might want to give them a look, you might find some other shots that trigger your memories - and there are a few more posts coming over the next few days before this series is complete. If you don't mind me asking: when and where did you live in New York (asking as a former resident myself) - have a great day - Joe
