Hi all,

I have the Canon 1.4x extender on my version 1 Canon EF 100-400. I'm thinking of adding a 2x, but some people say that lens doesn't work well with the 2x. If anyone has any images with that combo, could you share the best ones? Or links to sites that have done a comparison if you know any.

Or of course your own opinion on the topic.

If you want autofocus, that's the part that technically cannot work on any EOS DSLR.

The version I does not really work WELL with the 1.4X either ! ......https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-559479-1.html

MY opinion is that it might be acceptable for some people - using manual focus - but certainly nothing to brag about./

Cool test. I'll have to look at them side by side later, but closing and opening the downloads my eyes are not seeing much difference between version I and version ii with the 1.4x. Of course the version i is the lens in my kit so I don't want to see the difference.

Canon RP, so it's supposed to be able to autofocus at f11.

That EOS body will AF the 2x combo. I believe you'll find some examples from Rockwell of the EOS R or EOS RP review, or maybe the lens review? I remember reading / seeing sometime in the past.

It’s f8 with a 1.4ex at 400mm and WILL autofocus with many Canon bodies including the 5D3 and 5D4 (I have both the version 1 100-400L and the version II 1.4 ex) and have successfully used it with both. 1 find the 1.4x yields acceptable results, but not the 2.0x.

So you have or had the version i lens with the 2x and found it wanting?

No, sorry, didn’t mean to imply that - I should have been clearer. I found that the combination with the 1.4x will AF at f8 and that the results are acceptable (at least to me).

Gotcha, with the mirrorless the 2x should auto focus, just wondering about the hit in quality and musing about options: shoot with the 1.4 and crop and maybe resample (26 megapixels) or some other option.

Thinking mostly for western national parks wildlife. Everything is too far away no matter what the lens is.

My reference to manual focus was with the 2X - and assuming a DSLR ......but I did not make it clear 8-(

Now the OP is saying he has the mirrorless ! ??

Yes, just using the 1.4X and cropping and using pixel enlargement software is what I would do. 8-)

I have both the 1.4 and 2 extenders. The only one that works well with the 100-400 II is the 1.4. Never had any luck using the 2 with this lens. I have tried it with both the 7D II and the 5D III. MTC

No one said it outright. Most cameras cannot auto-focus with a lens that wide open is f/8 or smaller (f/11, etc). A 2X adapter in effect doubles the f#. So an actual f/4 with adapter is as bright as an f/8 without, and so on.

Canon mirrorless can focus at f11, but will it be of good image quality? Sounds like the consensus is no.
