I'm confused. I have a photo in Organizer (PSE 12) that has a question symbol in the upper left corner. I know what that means, but when I do a search of C drive it is not there. Is there ANY way to restore it? Of course, I love the photo!!
Thanks, Don
You typed the image file is not there. Did you mistype? Or, can you simply recover the image from your backup files? If you place the file back where it belongs, the Organizer should remove the missing icon.
The image file is NOT in File Explorer, but in Organizer. How can that be?
The file was deleted or moved by something outside of Organizer (like Explorer) and Organizer was not told?
Organizer is looking for it in the last location that it knew about and cannot find it.

You deleted the file in error? You moved it to a new location other than where the Organizer references? Check your Recycle Bin or your back-up files is likely your only option.

If you don’t find it in the recycle bin, download a copy of Search Everywhere and look for it by name. This is a very useful utility, and I keep it on my desktop for cases like this. The other night, I was working moving some folders and suddenly, an entire folder disappeared, not to be found anywhere. A quick search with Everywhere found it inside another folder. How it got there, no idea, but easy to do when dragging and dropping in Windows.
It's a preview that shows up in the organizer. You have to point it to the real file.
According to a search of C drive there is no photo with the same file #. How can there be a preview if there is
no file in File Explorer?

At one point the cataloger read it and displayed it.
The cataloger is a "database" of images, not a copy. The cataloger is "told" to go find them and add them
to the list. The cataloger stores their existence (location) when it finds them. It does not make a copy for the catalog. If an image is deleted (OR MOVED) not using the catalog program, the program does not know it was (re)moved. Last it knew, the image was stored "over there", but wait! It's GONE!
Some catalogers may store a preview thumbnail, some simply show a "?" when it looses an image.

Herein lies the importance of regular backups.
That is why I don't use a cataloger software.

But without the cataloger, if you accidently delete the file you may never know it's missing. Or, you may not remember the name to go search for it in another location.

I know exactly where (in what directory) my images are located.
My "cataloger" is Windows Explorer.
I don't have to worry about a cataloger database being updated (or not...).
