The title Earl of Carrick seems to go back well into the 13th century, much before Somerset Butler "1st Earl of Carrick" in the 18th century. See what I mean about UK history?

I agree Camera. Their obsession with titles is confusing. Maybe Somerset should be called the 1st Modern Earl of Carrick.
