These shots are of the Great Falls of the Potomac, taken from the C&O Canal National Park in Maryland, outside Washington, DC. The park extends 181 miles from Washington to Cumberland Maryland and was in use from the mid-1850's until the early 1920's.
Good memories of hikes and bike rides there, thanks!
Nice water--happy that you left it natural.

Also some very scenic spots along the restored canal.
My dad led the mules that pulled the barges along the canal when he was 12 and we went visiting along when he was quite old. Some pretty spots and great for hiking and biking.

It is a favorite spot for us to hike and bike. I grew up in the area. My Father kept a canoe at Swain's Lock, where we would use it to bass fish in the River.

I never knew! Just beautiful. I love the view in 3...
Beautiful shot of the falls and the surroundings. I had no idea that was close to DC. Thanks for posting.
I realize I misspoke in my original. The park extends 181 miles, but it was the canal that was in use until the early 1920's. The park was not established in 1961, first as a national monument. It is due in large part to the efforts of Justice William O. Douglas, who hiked the length of the canal to highlight the importance of preserving it as a park.
Thanks. Great shots from the other side.
Great pictures of a fun place to visit. Grew up in DC at the time of JFK's killing and onward.
Many times I fished for carp with dough balls - good catches of decent size fishes. Since we didn't eat them, strictly 'catch and release'. But, I would challenge friends to a game of testing our cars on the twisty two lane from DC to the park. The game was how fast could you drive and never touch the painted center line. If you touched it or crossed over the paint, you lost.
