The most difficult step in the PP of this image. To crop, or not. Some other opinions would be appreciated.

Cropping will bring out more of the noise in the sky area.

The image does not lend itself well to cropping. Too much of the already skimpy environment will become lost.

A better appearance would bring the Moon and the foreground tree branches closer together within the frame.

Happy Holidays!

I like both compositions. If you're going to print, you might need to address a bit of noise in the sky, and also the spot that is below the moon, a bit to the right. Looks sort of like you cloned something there, but it needs refinement.

A beautiful early morning (according to exif ) scene!

Thank you for the analysis, anotherview. I should have added that taking care of the noise was being deferred until the crop was decided. I'm not sure what is meant by the last sentence...do you mean to lower the moon, shift it closer to the side, enlarge the moon, or ...?

Just checking, but I had sent the text before adding the two images. Was your comment based on having both images present?

Egad, I thought I had taken care of the offending spot. You're right, the original moon was taken out and the hasty repair wasn't nice. You're also right on time of day. The title is "Waning Crescent In Thes Approaching Dawn".

I like the uncropped version.

I mean, by changing the perspective, you could incorporate more foreground with it visually closer to the Moon. I suppose you intended to have both the branches and the Moon in the frame.

You face the difficulty as well of essentially no color in the image. Hence, the image must rely more on the graphic impression of it. This approach then gives the dead space too much prominence.

You seem receptive to an unvarnished critique of your image.

So just a thought: In Photoshop, you could physically move the Moon closer to the branches on the right side, for a better arrangement, to suit the eye. Your image does have potential.

Happy Holidays! And safe shooting.

Uncropped view gets my vote. Most pleasing to the soul.

If you can do composites, make the moon bigger and use the original framing. Perhaps you could try shifting the moon down and to the left a little.

Thanks, R.G. I just now submitted the finished image for review here. And, I had just finished moving the moon back to its original position...down and to the right. However, nothing is static, and if it's already cast in stone another stone can always be found.

I prefer the first one. It shows a bit more of the environment. I have shot the moon in early mornings and evening. Both give a different view of the same moon. Personally I like the crescent moon. A full moon has been done countless times and posted here on the Hog. As for the noise and spot those are correctable items.

Where to crop or not crop has usually be a struggle for me. Though I originally picked your first shot, this one works for me. Once again I feel like a politician never really answering the question. Ask ten people what they would crop you may possibly get ten different edits.
I hope this all makes sense to you.

Frank, it makes perfect sense to me, which is exactly the reason I submitted it here. We keep going back and forth on the two. I finished the landscape as our oldest daughter picked it without hesitation. I guess now I'll finish the portrait too. One frame will fit both.
