The proper name of the Mac operating System #11 is Big Sur named after the location in California, USA.

Since this is a totally new OS you should wait for the second or third update. Also you should check to make sure that your computer is compatible with it. Which Mac (specifically) do you have and what Mac OS are you running?

There are a lot of apps out there that do not run under Big Sur. I know that the recent Adobe Creative Cloud updates have Big Sur and M1 chip support. Skylum's Luminar and Luminar AI don't. And the Loupedeck CT and Loupedeck + have issues.

I updated my iMac last week, have experienced no issues so far. iMac seems to be quicker than before, but no issues to report.

It was pretty painless. One thing before you do it...check http://roaringapps.com and make sure that nothing you rely on is incompatible...there are a few. LR and PS work fine, my 2 versions back Parallels Desktop doesn’t. No matter...VMWare 12 is now free for personal use and it imported my Parallels VMs just fine.

What a useful link! I see the Canon Utilities programs are unknown for the new os. So I will wait. But thank you!

McAfee firewall is totally not compatible with Big Sur. McAfee offers and apology and says they are working on a fix. They recommend using the MAC firewall. They have not offerred a refund on my subscription. The update on my iMac was easy with the above mentioned issue excepted.
My 2013 Mac Book Pro is not compatible with Big Sur. I hope Apple keeps providing updates for Catalina.

My 2012 Macs can't take any more OS upgrades.

Big Sur is exclusively 64-bit architecture and can not run 32-bit software, as I understand. So all your software will have to re-purchased and some of your favorites might be unavailable. Do a lot of research.

Very few apps are still 32-bits. Most were updated years ago, if the developers had any sense. Macs have had 64-bit processors since the mid-2000s.

Now the push is on to create apps that run natively on Apple’s ARM-based Silicon, rather than requiring the Rosetta emulator. M1 native code provides a huge speed boost over Intel chips in many cases, at less cost.
