I would like to hear from members that have this combination and would they recommend purchasing this lens for use on the D810

How low are your image quality requirements?

I have Nikon 28-300 lens on Nikon D850. In spite of having flock of other lens, I took this lens on National Parks Tour by Bus, I had great success. You have the reach, it is not heavy. Just perfect. Hope it helps.

I have a 14-24 F2.8, 24-70 F2.8 and a 70-200 F2.8 that are all great but I was wondering if this would be a good walk around lens or is it something that I should avoid.

You have the “Holy Trinity” of Nikon glass. You will not t have the same image quality with the 28-300. That said, I use that lens on my D750 as a walk around lens.

Maybe a better question should be a recommendation for a walk around lens to use with my D810

If you don’t need the reach, the 24-120 f4 lens is pretty good and I use that for
Event photography. I also have a Z6 and bought the 24-200 Z mount lens but have not traveled with it yet. That will be my vacation rig.

The 28-300 3.5-5.6 is about the same physical size as the 24-120 f4 constant aperture lens. Although the 24-120 might be a bit wider at the short end, a stop faster, possibly a little sharper, that extra 180mm at the long end can spare you from having to change lenses/carry 2 lenses, should the need arise. I love the 24-120 f4 that came with my D750, and it takes 95% of my photos, but on occasion, I do change to the 70-300 when the subject requires.

If you google "nikon 28-300 review" the first article that shows up is Ken Rockwells' review. Basically he loves it. He has quite a few sample images...some shot with the D810 as well as the D750 and D850.

Same here. Both 24-120 and 28-300 serving very well on the 750. Making no apology for reporting based on the 750 since the 25% greater resolution of the 810 doesn’t make a great difference.

The 28-300 does sometimes challenge the AF abilities of the 750 and it’s my understanding that the AF of the 810 is noticeably better. So get the lens and shoot no brick walls head on. Enjoy !

Ken is widely disparaged for being a pragmatic reviewer rather than a lab tester. This acoarst wins him frequent ridicule on UHH ... which is actually a badge of honor.

I have and use that combination, too, grandpaw. It's a bit heavy at times but the images look good. I feel that any detail loss from the lens is made "less noticeable" by the "gain" in apparent sharpness due to 45MPs. I always, always turn on VR and brace myself whenever possible.

Maybe you can take a couple of test photos before the purchase. Enjoy the holidays.

I have mine on my D850 and I also have the 24 - 120, f4. I use both and I'm happy. The pixel peepers say it's terrible, but I don't agree. Great lens for travel and walk around for amateurs. JMHO, Don
