Heard last night that Brigadier General Chuck Yeager had died at the age of 97. One of a kind, and a true American hero. Even before Star Trek made the phrase popular, he went where no man had ever gone before.
Watched The Right Stuff mini series on Disney+ last weekend (recommended!) and after that watched the original movie from the 1980's. Great movie and shows what a hero Chuck was!

One of my favorite movies. Love that Yeager himself played the old desert rat bartender in the film.
I read somewhere that his eyesight was so good in his military years that he could spot an enemy fighter squadron from 50 miles away. He probably never needed cheaters.

That 20/10 eyesight was a gift given to few. Building on that, Yeager earned the promotions and honors that were given him. Downed in France, he worked with the resistance and, having evaded capture and making his way to Spain so that he could rejoin the fighting, he petitioned to be allowed back into combat flying. Followed that with an outstanding record as a test pilot, and as a commander. If there is a heaven, I hope that 'Glamorous' Glennis was there to greet him.

I thought the Disney mini-series turned the book and original movie into a sleazy soap opera. The focus of the series was the moral failings, failed marriages, cheating and back stabbing that supposedly went on, back then. The book and movie painted them more as all American heroes which I suppose is just as erroneous, the truth generally falling between the two points of view.
Chuck has said that the movie The Right Stuff was entertaining. He was a consultant in the making of the movie so it's some what accurate .I have read his biography and he was quite a character. You would not be able to do the stuff he did then now. The thing with the broom handle in the X-1 is true.
