DIY Pod Mount for smartphone photography

This DIY cellphone tripod mount has served for about six or seven years, but, that it relies on Velcro f’r Gawd’s sake leaves me continuously nervous every time I use it. You would think that after all this time without a hook-and-loop grip slip I would have more faith in it ... no; it hasn’t dropped a camera yet ... but jeez! It’s just Velcro!

Anyway, here ‘tis ....it’s been working so far!

The hand grip aspect has been especially useful. I have a sensory/motor peripheral nerve degeneration that has left me with little or no tactile sense in my hands and the hand grip adapter to the pod mount has been very helpful.)

It’s construction is obvious to any fan of DIY; a few scraps of Baltic birch plywood (great for jigs of all sorts) and a 1/4” stove bolt receiver, and a tad of 5 minute acrylic glue..also a Manfroto quick-release plate for convenience of tripod / monopod attachment. (When in the wheelchair I’m a big monopod fan!)

...for what it’s worth..,

Dave

Good sharing Dave. You had a need, a plan, and good execution of the plan. Thanks. BTW, mine hasn't arrived either.

Hi,Fstop,
I ordered the Akron Mounts “Mega Grip Tripod Adapter with Phone Holder for Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy”

https://www.arkon.com/product/CMP400-iphone-holder-tripod-adapter-holder.html

I will be ordering another for my car tripod and monopod, but am waiting to see if this one is fully adequate.

I am also trying to work out a “gun stock /“Bush Hawk” sort of shoulder or chest- stabilized support for a digiscoping rig to use for BIFs. I’ve been successful at BIF by long lensing with my Sony A77 and A99 and am fully convinced that having one’s gear at least roughly focused for where-in-the-air that BIF is going to be is the recipie for success, and should be able to be accomplished as well with digiscoping as with the usual long-
lensing gear. Working out the balance issues for a smartphone digiscoping combo appears to be
the major challenge.

If anyone here is practiced and familiar with smartphone digiscoping, any practical advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

Interesting-looking tripod mount for the iPhone. Be sure to post some photos with your phone mounted on it. It looks substantial, more so than the one I have.
