Few raptors can be described as cute, but the Northern Saw-Whet Owl can. It is only eight inches long and tips the scales at 3.6 ounces. They live in the forests of the north and the mountains in the west. Their diet consists of mice, voles, small squirrels and birds. The name was given by early settlers because the "hoot" sounds more like a "toot" and sounds like a whetstone sharpening a saw blade. The one shown here was injured in the wild and was at the raptor rehab center in northern Michigan called Wings of Wonder near Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. It could not be returned to the wild and lives at the center and used for education in schools. The photos were taken in 2009 with a Canon Rebel and the early model Tamron 18-270 mm lens, shot a 270mm.

Thank you very much, Bultaco. They're had to find in the wild, even if they're near.
