Have a Nikon Z6 with 24-70 and 24-200 lenses. Considering getting into some Macro photography with
purchase of a nikon 105mm f2 8 g af-s vr if-ed micro. How would I get also get additional use as a prime
lens? Have heard that it performs well in this respect...? Your inputs greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ken

I have this lens. It works great as a short telephoto. I have taken one to both our local arboretum and to the botanical garden in San Antonio as my only lens for the day and shot it at all distances. It does a great job, and it is at a pretty decent price for an f/2.8 105mm lens. It's been on sale at a pretty deep duscount.

Agree with Larry - I have an earlier version. Sharp, superb and a great focal length for portraits.

I agree also. I have used mine for all distances and it produces fine stuff as long as I do my part.

Shoot it as you would with any 105mm lens.

Presently I only own 2 lenses for my Nikon D800, a 24-85 and a 105 Micro lens. I switch from one to the other for everyday carry lenses. On the days I choose the 105 I never have any problem finding photos to take, sometimes actual micro shots of insects or flowers and other times I use it while walking around the local zoo for dozens of photos. It is an appropriate lens to have with you all day every day if you take the time to use it. Did I mention portraits too? It is a great lens.

Try the Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro. Excellent lense and less expensive.

Is it still good for portraits with a crop sensor camera?

I also am shooting with a Z6 and it's the lens I use for portraits (as well as my go to lens for macro.)

The 105G Macro is a good lens and can be used for portrait.

Sharp lens that will do portraits with bokeh and macro...enjoy both worlds!

Merry Christmas!

I had that lens for about 6 years before I went to a smaller lighter system because of back problems. It was the best lens I owned in the Nikon system. It was tack sharp, great color and contrast and beautiful bokeh. The only draw backs where it is heavy and sometimes the autofocus system hunted. All in all I loved that lens as it always lived on one of my Nikon bodies. One of the best macro lenses around based on my experience.
