The Washington Post today reports that Bob Dylan, 79, has sold his catalogue of songs to Universal Music Group [“UMG”] for ‘nine-figures.’ Speculation on how much ‘nine-figures’ is range from Four-hundred-million to just shy of a billion dollars.
Others speculate on have UMG intends to recover their investment by licensing Dylan’s songs for commercial use. They range from:
It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) -- Band-Aid
Song To Woody -- Trojan condoms
Ballad of a Thin Man -- Weight Watchers
Idiot Wind -- Gas-X (with Rudy Giuliani as company pitchman)
Hoggers are invited to contribute.

I have approximately 50GB of CD quality Dylan - all his albums and most/all studio sessions. There’s a note in my final instructions to play Dylan at my wake. ‘Nuff said.
I have listened to Dylan since I was about 14; and will until I die.
Reports $200mm to $300mm+. Personally I think they got a great deal!

He's 79. That's the tip-off.

Can't say I was ever a fan of Dylan's as his voice just didn't set well with me, however, he did write some amazing songs that I liked very much, but performed by others. Joan Baez: It Ain't Me Babe, is one of my favorites. I was fortunate enough to see her twice at Jordan Hall in Boston.
I’ve been to many a Dylan concert. Still listening to him on CD. I’M 79, too, so I think I understand the sale!
"All Along the Watchtower" for ATM Security cameras.
What amazed me about Dylan's work was the number of huge hits others made of his songs. The Byrds, Joan Baez, Sonny & Cher, Jimi Hendrix, the Band, and on and on. One of my favorite of his (MANY) albums was the one he cut with Johnny Cash in the early '70s. I'm surprised he waited this long to monetize his catalog. A quarter of a billion $$$ would be fun to try to spend in my time left.
Like a Rolling Stone and Rainy Day Woman. I think he also did something with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Very nice pic following his first "sell out" (going electric)!

The greatest cover of Lay Lady Lay I ever found was by
Hoyt Axton.
Maybe he figures the present value of the future royalties for himself and his heirs will be much less than the 600 million.
