I use XQD cards with a write speed of 400 MB/s. And I have the D5 battery in my D850 and get 9 fps. I usually shoot in bursts and have not had a buffer failure yet. So, for now, I see no need for a CFExpress card but will do the upgrade regardless.
The price of these newer cards are not out of the ball park, and they are very fast.

Hi Bill,
I was running the same card and speed. I had buffer failure after about 15-20 shots using the D5 battery, shooting in raw. I bought the San Disk CFe 128GB card 1700 MB/s. Had to buy the San Disk CFe reader as the XQD diidn't work with it. The San Disk CFe reader isn't backwards compatible to the XQD either. Another thing I discovered - the CFe reader only comes with a short USB-C to USB-C cable. I had to buy a USB-C to USB-A cable. So between the 3 pieces I was at $300.00.

The results actually surprised me. No buffer failure whatsoever. In fact, the camera did something that surprised me. For jokes I put a SB-400 flash as a fill flash on and used CH (Continuous High) mode, shot a burst of about a dozen frames and the flash fired every single time. It never worked that consistently previously. Not sure it had anything to do with the card buffering but it did work. I bought the CFe card and reader at Best Buy and the USB cable at my local ATT store because I was there and it was convenient. Here is a photo of the two cards and two readers and the USB-C cable.

on a side note: I just had a bit of a scary moment with the firmware update on my D850: it seemed to complete w/out a hitch, but after the requested restart of the camera, it would no longer autofocus. Turned it off and back on again - still no AF. Turned it off one more time, removed the lens, put it back on, turned the camera on - now AF works flawlessly, again.
