I have whippets and a D850. My favorite thing to shoot are my dogs tearing around in my backyard. But I get a lot, mostly all, blurry pictures. At top speed whippets run at 35mph. First of all, what lens would you recommend? Then once I have that, recommended settings? I am shooting outside in my good sized backyard. Thanks for any help.

This should not be a problem. Lens choice would depend on how close you are to them as they fly by. You will have an easier time if they are moving across in front of you, say left to right. If you are using back button focus just track them and fire away in burst mode.k The key will behaving a fast shutter speed 3200 or more to stop the action. If necessary, just increase the ISO. Or you can slow the shutter down and try panning as they go by.
Depending on my position I've used both my 24-70mm and my 70-200mm, but I can get pretty close to my dogs,

My daughter has a whippet style dog (Nicks) that's pretty quick. Servo mode, with a fast sp & good panning technique I think are the keys. Burst mode & a fast focusing lens are also pluses. I'm inclined to shoot in shutter priority mode in the 1600-2000 range. I've learned to avoid wide open, like f2.8, in order to have a little DOF cushion. Might want to experiment with your AF tracking configuration.
