AD 1875 - William Magear 'BOSS' Tweed ... the boss of the NEW YORK CITY corruptocracy police machine, and convicted of stealing an estimated $200,000,000.00 from New York City taxpayers, escaped jail.

Tweed escaped and fled to Spain, where he worked as a common seaman on a Spanish ship. The U.S. government discovered his whereabouts and arranged for his arrest once he reached the Spanish border; he was recognized from political cartoons. He was turned over to the American warship USS Franklin, which delivered him to authorities in New York City and he was returned to prison.

Tweed now agreed to testify about the inner workings of the Tweed Ring to a special committee set in return for his release. After he did so governor Tilden of New York, refused to abide by the agreement, and Tweed remained incarcerated until his death in 1878.
