Hi y'all,
Looking for suggestions for an all around
lens for travel for my Nikon D7200.
Thank you.
My go to is a 70-300 G series Sony. Focuses close, 70 is close a normal lens, and 300 is a nice zoom. I love it for hiking etc.
When I had the D7XXX, I had the 18-200mm on the camera most of the time. When I went full frame, I got the FF equivalent - the 28-300mm.
The 16-85 was my walk around/most used for our national parks trip. I had a d7000 at the time. I did bring a host of other lenses but rarely used them.

What about the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens. It looks like a pretty good lens at a good price.
I have this lens and it spends most of the time on my D7100. It is not too heavy to make it uncomfortable and does a really good job. I have a collection of lens and if not using the Tamron 18-400 I use the kit lens (18-105) that came with the camera.

If extremely great IQ isn't a factor, I find the Nikon 28-300mm zoom quite acceptable if you need the reach. For the IQ issue, I agree that the 24-120mm Nikon is a better choice. I own and use both lenses.
I can see where the 24-120 FX would be good, that way if he ever gets a full frame camera he has a lens.
My wife uses the Tamron 18-400 on her D7200 almost exclusivly. Its really not that heavy, has decent IQ, a little distortion on the short end and kinda soft at the long. So when she wants wider she goes with the nikkor 18-140, much better at the wide end.
The tamron is only around $450.00 used. $575- $ 599.00 new.
Now i personally dont care much for it but she has instructed me to write this in this manor, so guys you know i have no choice.
My personal opinion would be the Sigma contemporary 18-300. In my opinion much better piece of glass than the Tamron.
OTOH. If i behave wife says i might get that DSLR upgrade i have been thinking about.....so the Tamron deffinitly the Tamron....
Any of the lenses starting at 18 mm is a good choice. In my case I use the 18-200 VR.

I like the Nikkor 18-140mm myself. It covers a pretty good range for me. I'm not a pro by any means but it's a pretty good walk around lens. I shoot landscapes fairly regularly and find some of the shorter lens are just too short for me.
The Tamron 18-400mm is my favourite travel walk around lens and is on my Canon 7D2 99% of the time when I am just wandering around

If my 18-55 isn't on my D7100, then I probably have the 18-200 mounted.
The 18-200 is my walk around. It aint perfect, but many times good enough really is good enough
A zoom lens with a range of 24-105mm will serve you well. Such a lens is called a general purpose lens.

The 18-140 is on my 7200 most of the time, as my walk around lens. It's a kit lens, but it is very good and sharp.

If sharpness matters, Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 Contemporary.......unless you NEED longer. This has the SPEED if you need it.
.
The Nikon 18-140 is a very good lens and it is rugged! The image I attached is of wild horses in a water hole.
I carry this lens attached to my D7100 on my horses in a saddle bag. It sees dust ect in those rides and has never failed me. It is just a great all around lens and lightweight.
Here is my recommendation. Travel in cities may require something wider. Travel in the great outdoors may require something longer. This lens is a pretty good compromise.
