Nineteen thirties era golfer Tom McAulliffe could break one hundred on an eighteen hole golf course as well as drive the ball one hundred and fifty yards ... all despite having no arms.
There's a lesson here....if you tee off with a five iron and keep it in the fairway, you can probably score better than using a driver if you're a high handicap player.

This Tom guy had to have an iron will....especially when he first took up the game!
In 1969, the National Amputee Golf Tournament was held at the Grand Haven Golf Course (Michigan) where I worked as an assistant. Early in the week, one of the players, Tommy Hebert, (as I recall) walked in to play a practice round. Both arms were amputated just a couple inches below the elbow. He reached in his wallet, handed me some cash & I had to give him change including coins which I was quite embarrassed as I didn't know how to hand it to him. He was a super nice young man, & he just smiled, scooped the money up with his elbows & put it in his pocket.
I watched him tee off on the 1st hole. There was a knob built up in the middle of the grip around which he hooked the crook of his elbows. GRCC has very narrow tree lined fairways & he drove one 225 down the middle.
I went out later to see him finish the front nine. He knocked his 3rd into the green side bunker on the par 5 ninth, about 60' from the pin. Exploded it to about 10' & made the putt for par. I believe he shot around a 90.
There were many other players that week and many played without the use of a prosthesis - on 1 leg or with 1 arm but for me Tommy was the most impressive.
