I second Triplets comment about Breakthrough Technologies ND filters. These ND filters have the least color cast 0f any of the major brands. I use both the ND 3 and 6.

B&W ND filters are my second choice.

Stay away from variable ND filters.

I just found a 10 stop 77mm B+W at keh.com listed EC for $59. Seemed reasonable.

Not all variables, like individual filters, are created equal. The biggest mistake users make is setting them close to or beyond their design extremes. Lenrentals rents a Tiffin VND filter, 2 - 8 stops of control, that they are fairly happy with for $25-$30 a week. It's the same filter available on Amazon for $174 and readily available on eBay and used for $75-$100. Here' a link to Amazon in Tinyurl format.

10 stop filters are easy to use.
Find exposure without filter at 1/30 sec.
Attach 10 stop filter, you shutter speed will now be 30 seconds.
Turn off AF, make sure your on a tripod, and cover the eyepeice.

I keep getting 34 seconds when I try to do the math. is the 30 just plenty close enough that it doesn't matter? Or maybe I'm doing the math wrong.

Bought a set of drop in filters, ND, some for B&W and several for sunsets or haze. Adapter for different filter sizes, holder snaps in place. Filters simply slide in place, can hold three if needed. Several choices on Amazon.

I guess there has to be rounding to match the practical world of standard camera dials.

I agree, I think these are the best and show no color cast at all.

I'm using Marumi ND filters. No color cast.

I had this feeling that I would Like to try more long exposure photos. I understand that use ND filters can help. I think I remember that the variable filters are not much but i see they are made by companies that have been recommended by mu UHH group. IF they are good the price and the ease of using just one filter sounds good. Give me some recommendions.

Avoid variable ND - the cost is irrelevant - they all have the same issue because they consist of a pair of polarizing filters - which is uneven polarizing effect over the frame. Better to get conventional ND filters. Hoya is fine.

Is it that the filters are not truly neutral? Or an artifact of long exposure in General? Both?

They are rarely neutral. But if you shoot raw, this is a non-issue.

1024/30=34. Your math is correct.

But nobody really cares. It actually doesn’t matter anywho.
