For Heather...
Hi, Heather,
Your kind note reminded me that though I’ve been responding to images posted in FYC, I’ve not posted an image here in a while... and so, given your concern that I had given up on B&W, here are a couple of B&w conversions of the image pair titled “First Wet Kiss of Winter” that I posted in the Smartphone Section, picturing the first definitive hint of impending winter when the glacial lakes first begin to ice-over.
C&C welcomed (I’m a bit ambivalent).
Dave
Nice work with the black and white, Dave.
Dave, I particularly like your first image. It has that late fall early winter feel for me. The second one to my eye the water looks a bit dark to fit its surrounding. But I think it would be an easy fix. But it is your shot and you may like it that way.
Very nice. I think the first one is best, perhaps just a little more light in the second one?

Thanks, Frank and Jack, I appreciate your comments.
I agree re: the second one! I guess I really do need to sit a bit closer to the knee of Bob Malarz to absorb a bit more of his sense of tonal management!

I like the conversion in both photos; but I think the composition in the first shot is much stronger. The river forms a nice leading line that brings us to that single tree that becomes a point of interest in the background. Nice photo.
