Is there a way to off load pictures from a camera/memory card directly to a portable hard drive without using a computer, tablet or cell phone.

I just wasted a few mins of my time listening to this guy go on and on and never really answering the O/Ps question.
I remember many years ago being on a group photo shoot with a "Pro photographer"after fill his CF card he proudly got his portable storage drive out explaining how he could transfer all of his image from the CF card WITHOUT using a laptop, And behold it DIDN't work plus his images were lost when he removed the CF card. Now I don't know what happened, but It did save me from spending money.
I have been watching the market for years, and finally figured out its better to use a laptop, note book or the like to transfer image to my external storage drive,Why? because I can see the the image have been transferred!!!!
Now I do not travel by air or sea so I am always in my car/van and the laptop/Note book is not a great problem.
I stopped carrying all of my photo gear on my shoulder years ago, I now take a body and one or lens for whatever I plan on shooting, the rest of the stuff stays in the vehicle, I do carry an extra CF card or three in my pocket so if I do fill a card I can keep shooting, My Max cap cards used to be 2gb, now they are 16gb only because It is difficult finding 2gb cards.
I only take the Laptop if I am going to be away from home more than one or two days.

I have this one:
https://www.ravpower.com/products/rp-wd009-filehub

Did some basic testing to check how it works and all that, and I was happy with results. However, I still didn't use it "on the field", as had no trips since then.

In my case it is a way to have a second/backup copy, so I wouldn't delete/reuse the card. For that I just have additional cards that are very cheap.

Yes there are products designed for your needs. If I were buying one today, I would get the Gnarbox2.0.

https://www.gnarbox.com/

I currently use the Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA 2. It does not accept XQD cards, however.

Make sure you fully understand how these things work and what cards they can accept.

I have a WD My Passport WiFi drive with an SD card slot. You can use a cellphone app to control the transfer.

Like a previous poster, I also use the RAVPower WD009 with a 500gb ssd for storage.

https://www.ravpower.com/products/rp-wd009-filehub

https://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-FileHub-Wireless-Portable-Transfer/dp/B07P5QDQ1B

You can use the auto feature to back up the entire SD card or in conjunction with your phone (plus related app) to do a selective backup. Highly recommended for less than $40 on Amazon. And... RAVPower’s customer service is excellent, a good thing because the WD009 manual is a struggle. I made my own 3x5 “what I need to know” quick reference card.

And for the record, the YouTube video was painful to watch and could have covered all you need to know in less than 5 minutes.

Why not a cellphone or tablet?

My solution uses a battery powered mini-router which sets up a local wifi network. You log into it and you have access to any device connected to the same network. The router has an SD card slot built in. So, you can send files to any USB device from that card slot, and I think the current version also lets you send to a USB device connected to a battery powered hub. In addition to providing local connectivity to portable devices it will also charge your phone, function as a bridge, hotspot etc.

It's not exactly the answer to your question, but it does address the implied question in your thread title and offers another way of looking at the problem of back up while on the go. I leave the hard drive home and just use a couple of 512GB memory sticks.

That's my method. You don't even need a cellphone app; you can set up the drive to automatically transfer any new files on the SD card to the hard drive.

Yes, but I like using the app to control what folders I put cards from different cameras or locations in.

Just to be clear there is a WD My Passport Wireless AND a WD My Passport Wireless SSD.
First one is a conventional rotary drive, the second is, as named, an SSD.

Strongly recommend the SSD version- more expensive, but much more rugged and resistant to drops, etc.
Available capacities range from 250 GB to 2 TB.

These have SD slot, or can use card reader for other types of cards.

Can be used as a backup power bank of 6700 mAh in the SSD, 6400 mAh in the non-SSD..

Access is by USB or wireless.
