No, you absolutely do not have an “obligation” to play price police. You are not selling the item, and unless you are buying, it is really none of your business. (Sorry to be blunt, but that’s the case). Try to put yourself in the seller’s place - would you appreciate it?. You don’t know his circumstances, how much he has invested, or typically the details of the condition. And, without a ton of careful research, you don’t really know all those things about the competitive product/price. If the price is uncompetitive, the market (or lack thereof) will inform the seller, no need for an external critique or a spoiler. If you want to PM the seller to be helpful, then go for it, but it shouldn’t be posted on the thread (in my opinion).
No, you absolutely do not have an “obligation” to ... (show quote)

Don't like the price? Don't pay it!
I'm sure many people would have a "more acceptable" (to whom) price in mind?
If a store price is too high on something, do they complain to the store?
I'll bet some people actually do, but most will simply not purchase the item.
But, it's social media and they can say whatever they want.....

I understand what you are saying but if I observe that an item is overpriced don't I have an obligation to both the seller and potential buyer of the situation? As an example, a seller may price a Version 1 of a particular lens at the market price of a Version II lens. And furthermore, he may have done so unintentionally. I think that this should be pointed out so that everybody is on the same playing field. I think this can be done through a PM to the seller.

Changing the wording and the thinking to: I think this should be done through a PM to the seller.

Then you have the correct idea. The seller can choose to act and / or ignore. The buyer has their own responsibilities to research their offer price. The buyer has already met the 18-year adult threshold to participate and spend their money as they see fit. Neither needs anyone publicly peeing on the for-sale post.

You put in the minimum of effort and failed to get even the minimum of results. "Jumped on by Trolls" greatly exaggerates what didn't happen. Your post reads like: I have a car,,,, four wheels,,,,, drives well,,,, $550,,,,,take it or leave it. Good luck with your next attempt.

In mot be obvious that the so-called trolls are everywhere on the forum and not confined to the buy and sell section. They come and go. Sometimes they subside or desist for a while and then reemerge. Some are expelled and others replace them. Fortunately, they do not comprise the majority of participants on this site, but they do tend to become annoying and distracting.

Personally, I don't utilize the buy and sell section on this forum because I would rather negotiate locally with folks I am dealing with and want to avoid the kinda "third-party interference" that is likely to occur here online. I'm sure, however, the section is a good resource for others.

I agree that PATIENCE is certainly a virtue in dealing with trolls, however, it can be difficult to restrain one's self at times when you see some folks spoiling and abusing a perfectly decent and useful resource like this forum. I have been a member here for a long time and only told someone to mind their own business and go away once or twice. It seemed to work at the time but, in the long run, I don't know if that approach will do any good. It is probably best to ignore bad behaviour and report it to the administrator and hope for the best.

In my "OUGHT TO BE A LAW" wish list, there are some of the shenanigans that soud be prohibited, or at least seriously discouraged on the forum:

" Impersonating an officer": Self-policing is a good thing but trolling for spelling and grammatical errors and typos but disrupting a conversation about technical or artistic matters and thereby turning it into an unwelcomed English lesson or a debate on semantics, usually results in a series of off-topic skirmishes. Unless an incorrect word or term causes a serious technical misunderstanding, leave it alone!

If a post seems too long or short, runs on, or is too advanced or too elementary for you, rather than complain, don't read it and move on.
If you disagree or have technical issues with any statement, you can RESPECTFULLY disagree. Don't start or prolong an argument- just state your case and move on. Otherwise, you are insulting the other readers' intelligence. Most folks around here are smart and are capable of separating the truth from the alternative facts and come to their own decisions and conclusions.

To save the administrator a ton of work, an algorithm shod be employed that automatically detects foul language, pejorative terms, name-calling, and statements or amateur online diagnosis about anyone's psychological health and immediately delete it or cast it into a recycling bin of sorts.

Speak of psychology- I ain't a psychologist. At school, I didn't take up the elective class in basic psychology and opted instead for a semester of "Photo-Electronics". I, therefore, can't say, with any level of expertise, what motivates folks to become chronic trolls. Perhas it's unresolved "schoolyard bullying issues", immaturity, their cable-TV serve no longer offers WWF wrestling, the seek attention, the current political environment, a gout epidemic, the pandemic, or- could be radioactive energy in the air leftover from Chernobyl? Beats me!
