I recognized the name as coming from the Ute language but didn't know the story behind it. But your image did remind me to make some Mormon Tea this morning.

Ephedra (probably
viridis but there are other varieties) Tea intake, y'know? The ephedrine component is useful, but a little too much of the tea and it can have an emetic effect. (Personally, I think the stuff tastes horrible. Guess appreciating a taste for it is something that's developed...)
