Nikon is faring poorly, according to this report. I'm a Canon user, but I take no joy in their travails.

And, at some point, each camera manufacturer will start approaching market saturation, and sales will go down.

Over the years there have been doomsday stories about the demise of Nikon, the demise of DSLRs, the demise of film and yet they are all still here. It is more productive to be concerned what actually IS happening than what MIGHT happen.

Covid has not helped. There are many products that will suffer because of it. Toilet paper won't be one them.

I don't think you are looking at all the companies that have actually failed here. Many are gone and quickly forgotten. It could happen to Nikon too.

Nikon is a multi-faceted company. More than just cameras and related products. Cell phones have had the greatest effect on the loss of market share for all camera manufacturers. Not all are affected equally.

I don't think that Nikon Medical optics will be replaced by cell phones any time soon

The bottom line:

"The most common scapegoat for poor camera sales, the growth of the smartphone market, is not entirely to blame here. Toyo Keizai says that Nikon’s fear of conflicting with its DSLR camera sales made the company reluctant to produce a mirrorless camera. By the time it entered the market, Sony had long since entrenched itself. In 2019, Sony produced 1.65 million units, while Nikon had only produced 280,000."

For that matter you can say that it could happen to any company in existence today. Nikon makes much more than photography gear. It is a major player in medical and scientific equipment, binoculars, rifle scopes, etc. Nikon started as a company making medical and scientific lenses and precision equipment and only branched out into photography later. Nikon does not rely on photography to survive.

They’ll figure it out. Just a process of matching supply and demand with the right product mix. And recognizing the reality of necessary downsizing. Companies need to change in order to remain the same.

Why don't camera manufacturers design and make cameras that also do the things that cell phones do? I would love to have a better designed cell phone that is nicer to hold and use for photos than existing cell phones are.

Just what I need, a social app on my camera.
I have a cell phone. Why would I need a camera that does what my cell phone is capable of doing?
(If I would use the camera as a phone, would I point the lens at my ear or the camera back?)

I agree. A camera is a camera and a phone is a phone and never the two shall meet.
