Walled Cities and Towns: Murten...
...or Morat, Switzerland
The town's name was first mentioned in VI century as a place called Muratum. In XI century, King Rudolph III of Burgundy built the town's first fortification walls. Since then, Murten changed hands of numerous rulers, mostly of French, German, and Savoy origin. In 1416, the fire that consumed the town led to its rebuilding in stone. On June 22, 1476, Charles the Bold, King of Burgundy tried to concuer the town but after 13 days of siege Murten was saved by the Bernese Army. The Burgundians were totally destroyed, around 10.000 of their soldiers were killed in what is now known as the Battle of Morat. The citizens celebrate this victory on the 22 of June every year.
Arter this war, Murten began mostly peaceful development, creating professional guilds, growing wealthy on the trade with other towns in the region, and finally became a part of the Canton of Friburg.
Industrialization of Murten began in 1800th with opening an absinthe distillery, a watch factory, a winery, just to name a few local businesses. In 1876, the newly built railroad connected Murten with its neighboring towns in the region. The fact that the town was situated on the Southern shore of the picturesque Lake Morat gave a start to the tourist industry with the celebration of the 400 Anniversary of the Battle of Morat.

Nice captures of this historic town. Great rendering and some very interesting viewpoints. Please stay well and keep on sharing.
You do good tours, Eugene!
Nice images, Eugene, from a town in my native country that I know quite well and visit quite frequently - a delightful little place and I like your images. It is situated on the language frontier in Switzerland with the area to the east speaking German and to the west speaking French, thus it has the two names Murten in German and Morat in French. The town itself is very much bi-lingual but with a majority speaking German as their mother tongue, or actually the Bernese dialect of German, to be exact. Thanks for posting these nice images. Joe
