It is hard taking photo's outside in bright sun. I know a few problems with this photo, you can see the tag inside his shirt, the shadows are bad. However does it look like I did an ok job with the focus on his eyes. Seems I have a hard time getting the true color of his red hair.

It is a very sharp photo and the focus is dead on. A little contrast to tone down the light and paint over the tag and you have a great photo. In my opinion, I am not a pro but I would love this photo of my kid.

IMHO, the focus is clear. The problem ,I believe, in capturing the true color of his hair, is that lighter hair especially when that short and thin allows any light to wash out the color. Maybe a little less direct light on the hair. Handsome young lad though, and a very cute keepsake photo. Much more than a snapshot

I am not a portrait photographer, but it looks like your focus is just fine. Have you tried using highpass on them to really make those beautiful blue eyes pop?

I like the whole picture. The tag is part of the shirt, the shadows say you're outside on a bright beautiful day having fun.

I agree with Kavin 1957. The tag is part of the shirt. No fault to be found there in my himble opinion. The focus as others mentioned is great and I am sure someone who is a lot better then I at pp could get the red back in the hair. He sure he is a cute little guy.

Try taking this same photo in the early morning - before 10am or in the evening and see how it turns out. Very cute smile.
