I'm looking for the best pen or marker to sign my name on metal that has a high gloss print.
Is it acceptable to sign the back?
What's the point of signing the back? Check with the printer to find what type of pen will not affect the UV coating on the print before you sign it.
I use an ultra-fine Sharpie. Some printers will actually imprint your signature directly, so you might think of that.

Thanks jimvanells,
I have tried fine point permanent markers, gell pens and others and they don't stay on the image. You can wipe them off, so I figured the back would work if someone wanted a signed print.
Just use photo logo and add it to the photo during post processing

Thank You AzPicLady,
Are you using it on a glossy metal print? I've thought of just having it imprinted as you say, but it just seems a little too impersonal. Maybe I'm overthinking it. I rarely consider my photos of the quality that need my name on them, but people have asked me about doing so.

Thanks Photojoe1,
It might come to this as I sometimes make a mess of my signature and wouldn't want to do that on a finished photo.

Yes, I am. As far as I know, no problems. What problem would there be?

I tried a fine point permanent marker and it would wipe off or not leave clean lines.
Thank You Jersey T, I'll give them a try.
I never tried to wipe it off, so I don't know about that. Not sure why anyone would do that. I also put my name, copyright, and inventory number on the back of metal and canvas prints.

It happened by accident, so I started experimenting. I like your idea of the info on the back. Maybe there is a coating on mine which makes the ink bead up or just not stick. I use a reputable printer so I'll probably get in touch with them. I knew people on UH would somehow have experience doing this. Thanks again, Charlie
Food for thought... logos and branding added to an image are detractors...
For submission for publication generally assures those images will be instantly rejected...
While commercial studios typically add their branding to the front of their prints, top fashion and beauty photographers don't... I've never noticed Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh, Helmet Newton, Iving Penn signature on their work...
Back in the day when I was doing the Crafts Fair "Art Prints" circuit I signed the back of my work... wasn't precocious enough to "Number" them... lol
btw, my uncle who owned a custom print framing shop had a very ornate sticker with his brand logo and contract info that he placed on the back of all the framed work he did... this worked well for him... just a thought
Hope this helps alberio
