In this set, we travel along the road on the very western end of the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Unfortunately I was not aware of the possibility to drive out to the cape and lighthouse Öndverdarnes at the extreme end of the peninsula - something left to do next time! We see several references to the Snaefellsjökul glacier and even though I saw the mountain, I did not see the glacier. See reference below. By the time I reached the famous Londrangar pillar rocks, the rain was pouring down and all I could achieve was to get the interesting silhouettes from my partially opened car window. I had a better chance on our recent visit in February 2020, but these new pictures will appear in a different series.

SNAEFELLSJÖKUL GLACIER is a 700,000-year-old glacier-capped stratovolcano situated on the western-most tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland. Sometimes it may be seen from the city of Reykjavík over Faxa Bay, at a distance of 120 km. The mountain is one of the most famous sites of Iceland, primarily due to the novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864) by Jules Verne, in which the protagonists find on Snæfellsjökull the entrance to a passage leading to the center of the earth. The mountain is included in the Snæfellsjökull National Park.

Today's images cover the ground more or less between Olafsvik and Arnarstapi at the extreme tip of the Snaefellsnes peninsula

Isolated country, Joe. You did good. Are those power lines in 9 and 10?

Thank you Barbara - you are right, very isolated, even though we are on the most coveted part of Iceland, except for the capital region, there not not many habitations here - but that's the beauty of Iceland. I have to assume that these are power lines in 9 and 10 - didn't notice them in the pouring rain when I shot them, and at that time when I was doing minimal post-processing on Picasa, I wouldn't have known how to remove them - today of course I would take that small effort of removing them. Thanks for looking and have a nice weekend - Joe

Thank you Mike - interesting: you like those two last shots with the "sculptures" in the mist - they were intriguing despite the rain, but I do have to admit that I rather go for the "Little house on the prarie" ...

Have a great weekend - Joe

Thank you Ken - I do have to admit it looks better in sunshine, but that wasn't on the menu for this day - Enjoy your weekend - Joe

Looks like God has his eye on the church in #2. And am I the only one who sees a snoring giant's face in the profile of the mountain? I wonder about myself sometimes.
