In April of this year my wife and I visited this location. Once I saw this barn I knew I wanted to attempt a Star Trail over it. As usual, I pulled out my IPhone and opened the Photopills app to activated the Augumented Reality feature. It showed Polaris right over top of that beautiful old tree. I wanted to wait until all the leaves fell off so I knew it was going to be later this fall before I would be able to shoot this. Also, later in the year the time changed and it gets darker much earlier. I could get started earlier and be home earlier. PhotoPills told me when the next New Moon would be in November and has luck would have it, my Clear Outside app predicted there would be clear skies on the night I wanted to be there. The only thing I had to put up with was light pollution from downtown Nashville. But like they say, you take what you can get. Nikon D7000, Tokina 11-16 F2.8 at F4. ISO 200. 30 secs exposures. Started at 6 and ended at 9:30.

Thanks Tom. I think I ended up using 370. Some I didn't use for exposure problems and Plane trails etc.

Thanks for the reply...
I have been trying this for the last coouple of nights.
The longest I have shot tho has been for 3 hours, and I think that gave around 300 shots.

These are the two I have tried.
I dont have the data for them, but the first one, if memory serves me right, 300 shots, at a 30 sec. exposure , ISO set at 100.
The second shot probably was also 300 shots at a 30 sec. exposure but I changed the ISO to 500 just to see the difference in the 2 shots.
Also in the second shot my lens started to fog up on during the timeframe of the shots.

What program do you use to process your shots?

When I shoot with my Nikon D7000, I have one slot for RAW's and the second Slot for JPEGS. I usually run the JPEGS through Starstax to see what kind of trail I will have. This gives me a premlinary preview and from there I decide whether or not I want to spend the editing time in Photoshop with the RAW files and the timely process of getting out all those Plane trails that I know will be there. Below you will find what my intial image that came out of Starstax looks like. Let's just say, it took me awhile to edit out all those plane trails. LOL

I shot with D7100 and had the duel slots also, The first night I did them in RAW and then went to upload them to StarStax, I didnt know at the time they needed to be in JPEG, so I had to convert them all to JPEG. The second night I just soht in JPEG. I probably am going have plane trails also as I'am shooting these from my backyard and I am in the flight pattern for Charlotte Internantional Airport, no way am I taking the time to remove all that....lol...unless someone is offering bucks for the picture. I'm going to give it another shot tonight and see what happens. Going use an ISO of 200 tonight, also going with 30 second exposure with a goal of 4 hours time.

Sounds like a plan. Good luck, Please post your results. The process for removing the Plane trails is very easy, it's just time consuming.
