Floating around on Lake Perez, Pennsylvania.
Thanks for sharing this photo. Given the black back, angular head, and white stripe across the bill, could this be a Ring-necked Duck? Just wondering. Keep shooting and sharing. jak
Yep, you're right, it is a Ring Necked Duck.
They are one of my favorite ducks, very beautiful. Have a good day.
Every year, when the Scaups and ring-necked ducks return, I have to check to remember which is which. I usually wind up with “why don’t they call it ring-billed?”
One of the problems in identifying Ring-necked Ducks is the the ring is frequently difficult ti see. Still, they are a very attractive duck. As implied by bamfordr, the white band on. The bill is both more distinctive and more visible than the neck ring.

Joe, if you go back and read the chain of messages, you'll see that the photo was of a Ring-necked Duck and NOT a Scaup. They are somewhat alike, but the color pattern of the body and distinctive markings on the bill make it clear which species was photographed. Doesn't detract from the quality of the photo...just wanted you to know which it was. I can send you comparative photos in a Private Message if you are interested. Just let me know. Because they are both fairly common here, I have plenty of both. They are both very attractive ducks.

In my second reply I acknowledged my mistake.
