Poorly titled article in the NY post can be interpreted rather differently...

One person dies from COVID-19 every 17 seconds in Europe.

So, the guy/gal dies every 17 seconds, somehow resurrects in between only to die again...

Jesus has nothing on him, except to the dying again... and again...

Groundhog day in 17seconds!!!

Yup, wording is everything?

(I wrote to a local TV station asking if High Schoolers were writing their articles.
I never received a reply.)

Too bad they didn't see fit to thank you for the flattery - in recent years most publications seem to be using third graders for their writing/proofing (when any!).

Apparently most media write for a grade-6 level as a standard... They don't state whether those were grade 6 graduates, however!

Haha.
That doesn't mean they have to write like a 6th grader.

Sir, I hope you didn't plan to educate people about grammar on THIS site. There are quite a few grammatically (and spelling) challenged members of the 'Hog (Note: If you're reading this and getting incensed, then, well, you know who you are). Good catch on the article - loved it!

You people are really bored and/or suffering from Cabin fever.

Two or more brain cells that have been introduced to each other know they are saying that on average there is a death every 17 seconds.

And for a few decades wording it the way they did it has been growing to be the standard. After all it is a living language and grows/changes over time.

If you want a language that is fixed and doesn't change then use Text Book Latin or Ancient Greek.

But, yes, more and more newspapers and magazines, TV news, radio etc. etc. seem to use drop outs or people who used their Mom's cookies to bribe their English* teacher for a passing grade.

*Opps! Forgot it is now "Language Arts". Of course calling it an "Art" means you can be creative and artistic in your usage.

I forgot, please don't insult 3rd and 6th graders so much. After all they are mostly too young to know better.

Furthermore, please don't use Idiot, Imbecile and Moron as insults. As I used to tell my students "Those are old fashioned medical terms used to describe different degrees of mental retardation and real Idiots, Imbeciles and Morons therefore have a real world excuse for acting like they do." I could add "What is your excuse?"

AFTER reading it, that is what is deduced.
Literally, "someone" is an individual, an unknown individual.

Used in a new-fashioned way...
Just like the word "gay". Old fashioned meaning: merry, as used in the Christmas carol "Deck the Halls".
Things change, society changes.

"Educated" people contribute heavily to the downgrading of English because the 'common man' of the world thinks that since they are educated, they must be saying it correctly. We have a female news anchor who frequently refers to helicopters 'hoovering' over the ground. And the proper use of prepositions has gone out the window. Nobody seems to know which preposition to use so they substitute them all with the word to. So when you are chatting it is not 'with' someone it is 'to' someone. Prepositions add to the color of our language and not knowing how to use them is pretty much criminal in my opinion.

Every day after reading my UHH blog I am tempted to write an article on spelling. It is just lazy that a really educated person fails to proofread before hitting the "send" button. After all, we only can judge the kind of person you are from your writings. What kind of person do you want to be?

“Someone in the US is hit by a car every 10 minutes.”
That poor man! You’d think he’d learn to stay off the road🥴
