Noisy VR on Nikkor 105mm Macro

I received a new Nikkor 105mm Macro lens today and noticed the VR is noisy. Not just the usual noise when it kicks in, but there's a constant humming. None of my other lenses do this. They're all dead silent once the initial noise abates. I'm going to send it back. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with this lens.

Thanks,

Alan

My lens makes no noise after it's mounted and settled down. Send it back!

Same here. In fact I don't notice hardly any noise at all. Request a new lens or return & re-purchase from somewhere else to make sure you don;t get the same lens back.

Good luck, Tom

I've had the 105 for about 7 years and do not hear anything out of it....Is it possible to try on a different body. Make sure the body you have is on the list of bodies to use the 105 with

Thanks all for the replies. I've tried it on my D7200 and Z6 with FTZ adapter. Its same on both. After the initial click-in when activating the VR there continues to be a low pitch whirring type sound. Not real loud but it should be silent, especially for a close-up/macro lens. I did some googling on it and there does seem to be a fair amount of people out there with this same issue. Now I'm not sure whether to replace it or return it and order the Sigma 105 macro instead. Any thoughts on that idea?

Thanks,

Alan

The 105 mm Nikon is one of the best lenses you could ever have. Get it replaced by your seller. I suppose you could send it to Nikon to get it repaired.

Any noise in a lens is not a good sign, especially if it's there all the time. Send it back ASAP and get it exchanged.

Are you hearing the noise when its mounted on a tripod? many maufacturers suggest turning VR off when mounted to a tripod, because the VR is trying to steady an already steady shot.

Of course, if you're hearing it while handholding, then this doesnt matter. I thought I'd bring this up, because i didnt see this information in your post.

I agree with everyone else though. You should definitely return it if the noise doesnt go away.

I have had both the Nikon 105macro and the Sigma 105mm macro
The Sigma is as good as the Nikon for almost half the price.

I was hand holding. Yesterday I could hear the noise from about 2-3 ft away, but today it seems to be less noisy. I now need to have it with 1 ft to hear it. I wonder if there was some break in that is reducing the noise. B&H doesn't have any more in stock right now so I'm going to wait at least a few more days before I make a decision on it.

Thanks,

Alan

I have the older version of the Nikkor 105 macro and would like to update it to the VR version.
Where might I buy one for a reasonable price? Thank you.

Sure, now the part is wearing off prematurely, that's why the noise is lower, eventually the lens will fail. Why take a chance, regardless if the noise goes away. Noises are generated by materials that are moving against each other. In a lens, it is caused by something that should not make noise, therefore it will eventually break.
