How fortunate to have such a water feature in your yard to attract these beautiful birds! I wonder if you could shoot from a lower angle to minimize the distraction caused by the embankment? I'm sure you will have plenty of opportunity to try different things. The snake is phenomenal.

These were taken over the past few days around the yard at our newly built home in East Dallas. Shooting toward the bright sun was challenging. Herons and egrets feed at our pond regularily. I snuck outside as quitely as possible. The Heron looked straight toward me at times, but didn't mind my presense as long as I remaied still and stayed about 150 feet away. Sometimes I have to use our house as a blind to avoid spooking the birds, but I avoid it as much as possible because shooting thur dual pane tinted windows degrades sharpeness and reduces 2 stops of light.
Snake might be a young Hog snake. Very small: Maybe 1" in diameter and 18" long.
Shot from 7 feet away; Close enough. Canon 7DM2 with 100-400L II.

Love the BIF and am very jealous!

Thanks. It's a mixed bag because there's the embankment at the base of pond, then a long swath of tall trees behind it. Either way, there's lots of background to contend with. When they fly in the direction I shot at, I generally have no choice even if I was on laying on the gorund. Sometimes there's a split second where they fly between the trees and open sky. I've gotton a few of those, but rare. Good suggestion though. Lot's more time to experiment.

Thanks. Snake was initially fully visible on top of the lawn when I first saw him. Then he bolted to another spot a few feet away and resurfaced heads up while his body remained cloaked below the grass. Self protection probably.
